Vivianne Miedema struck twice in the second half as Arsenal thumped Leicester 5-0 in the WSL, with Leah Galton on target in Manchester United’s 1-0 win against Brighton.
Leicester 0-5 Arsenal
Vivianne Miedema struck twice in the second half as Arsenal thumped Leicester 5-0 in the Women’s Super League.
Beth Mead gave the Gunners an early lead but second-from-bottom Leicester put up stiff resistance until midway through the second half, when Dutch striker Miedema netted a brace in eight minutes.
An own goal and an opportunist strike from Tobin Heath rounded out the scoring.
Arsenal topped the standings with 43 points, two points above Chelsea ahead of their showdown with Reading. Both teams will have four league games left to play after Sunday.
Speaking to the BBC after the win boss Jonas Eidevall said Arsenal can only control what they do on the pitch.
“We could have scored a couple more goals in the first half,” Eidevall said.
“Then in the second half we scored some easy goals, but I think the scoreline fairly did (reflect the match). Demi Lambourne had some amazing saves. I’m not standing here being sorry for winning 5-0, I think it reflects our performance.
“We can prepare for the games we are playing, we can control our own performances, for me I’m just as motivated if we’re on top at the moment or if we’re number two. We need to keep on believing, keep on preparing, keep on performing, and who knows where it takes you in the end. But we can only do whatever we can do.”
Manchester United 1-0 Brighton
Earlier in the afternoon, Leah Galton got the only goal of the game as Manchester United beat Brighton 1-0 to reopen a three-point cushion over fourth-placed Manchester City, who beat West Ham United 2-0 on Saturday.
Bottom side Birmingham City battled to a scoreless draw with Everton on Friday. Trailing Leicester by seven points, Birmingham now look almost certain to be relegated.
Elsewhere, a late Ramona Petzelberger goal gave Aston Villa a 1-0 win away at Spurs.
Liverpool crowned champions and clinch promotion
Liverpool won 4-2 away at Bristol City to win the FA Women’s Championship title in front of a record crowd and clinch promotion back to the WSL.
Niamh Fahey, Jasmine Matthews, Katie Stengel and Missy Bo Kearns were on target for the Reds, with Aggie Beever-Jones and Abi Harrison scoring for Bristol City.
The match was played in front of 5,752 supporters at Ashton Gate, a record attendance for the division.
Current Liverpool boss Matt Beard was in charge when they won the WSL in 2013 and 2014 and has become the first coach to win titles in both of the country’s top two women’s football leagues.
“If you look at this division, everyone thought Liverpool being relegated would go right back up. Nobody’s got a divine right to be anywhere and we’ve earned that right for sure,” Beard said.
“We’ve worked incredibly hard to get back (to the WSL). It’s a tough division. I do think we’ve got a great group of people here and our aim and ambition will be to be sensible, consolidate ourselves and then progress year on year.”
Liverpool are unbeaten in 19 of the 20 matches they have played this season. They are currently on 49 points with two games left to play.
Despite the loss, Bristol City remain second in the table, two points ahead of Crystal Palace with a game in hand on the Eagles.
