After a touching Melnyk tribute and a rousing win, a new era dawns for the Senators

The game was a blend of farewell to the chief and the dawn of a new era in Ottawa Senators history. Eugene Melnyk, the man who owned the Senators for nearly two decades, was remembered in a ceremony prior to the Senators’ first home game since Melnyk’s death last Monday. The owner was honoured fittingly, in a 5-2 win over the visiting Detroit Red Wings, to complete the home-and-home sweep vs. Detroit. That Josh Norris would score a hat trick, the second consecutive three-goal effort by a Senators player against Detroit in these two games (Mathieu Joseph had three on Friday), put a punctuation mark on a rousing afternoon in a nearly full Canadian Tire Centre. Norris says he hadn’t scored a hat trick since his peewee hockey days. As fans walked through the arena parking lots, they noted the flags at half mast to honour Melnyk, before walking into the gates to be met with boxes of bizarre giveaway merch – ‘Happy New Years’ hats and noise-makers. Melnyk himself would have gotten a chu...

Arteta apologises for ‘unacceptable’ Arsenal | Tierney injury ‘not looking good’

Mikel Arteta has apologised to Arsenal’s supporters for his team’s “unacceptable” performance in the 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace. The Gunners’ top-four hopes took a significant dent at Palace, a result which leaves Tottenham in fourth place after the Premier League weekend. The Gunners do have a game in hand on their north London rivals but this was an out-of-character performance from Arteta’s side, as first-half goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Jordan Ayew and a second-half Wilfried Zaha penalty handed fantastic Palace the points. Arteta, who was missing left-back Kieran Tierney with a knee injury picked up with Scotland after playing in both of their recent friendlies, criticised his team’s performance, admitting they did not compete physically with Palace. He told Sky Sports : “Congratulations to Palace for the game they played but we made it impossible for ourselves with the way we competed. “You have to be physical and run and then you earn the right to play. We were re...

Blue Jays release infielder Greg Bird from minor-league deal

LAKELAND, Fla. – Despite making a strong push for a spot on the Toronto Blue Jays ’ bench, Greg Bird has been released by the team, industry sources tell Sportsnet. Bird exercised an out clause in his contract after learning that he wouldn’t be added to the team’s 40-man roster, making him a free agent. There’s still a chance Bird could re-sign with the Blue Jays, as he’s believed to have enjoyed his brief time with the organization. At the same time, other organizations are likely to have interest in the 29-year-old after a strong spring in which he hit two home runs and posted a .958 OPS in 11 games. Bird last played in the major leagues with the 2019 Yankees, but he’s fully healthy now and appealed to the Blue Jays because he offered power from the left side of the plate. The acquisition of catcher Zack Collins for Reese McGuire changed the complexion of the team’s bench, though, and may have impacted the approach with Bird. The 27-year-old Collins has a .917 OPS with 22 home ...
