IN an absolute thriller, Alex Eala edged out Spanish Cristina Busca, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) in the second round to enter the quarterfinals of the W25 Trophee Dela Ville in Grenoble, France on Thursday.
Trailing three games to six (3-6) in the tiebreaker round, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) world no. 164 Busca rallied and got a 7-6 lead, but Eala found her second wind to launch a 4-1 run of her own to win the match.
The WTA world no. 903 Eala lost in the first set, but controlled the second one as she returned the favor to the 23-year-old Busca, and set up a wild finish in the 2-hour and 33-minute match.
With the victory, the 15-year-old Eala marched to her fourth quarterfinals appearance as a professional.
The Filipina tennis prodigy first beat WTA world no. 190 and 32-year-old Laura-Ioana Paar of Romania, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, on Tuesday in the first round.
This Grenoble tourney has a $25,000 prize reward for the champion.
