Customs destroy P45M in used, new luxury vehicles

THE Bureau of Customs (BoC) has condemned more than P45 million worth of used and brand new luxury vehicles which the bureau had seized in favor of the government for violation of customs and internal revenue laws.

The destruction of the 10 supercars was done at the Port of Manila during the bureau’s 119th founding anniversary celebration and in the presence of Finance Secretary Secretary Carlos Dominguez 3rd, Undersecretary Antonette Tionko and Commissioner Rey Leonardo Guerrero

Destroyed were a used Ford F-150 Super SVT Can Raptor Pick Up, a brand new 2015 Toyota Landcruiser, a 2007 Bentley Continental GT, a 2012 Land Rover 2012, a Range Rover Evoque 2019, a Porsche 911, a Mercedes Benz, and an Alfa Romeo.

Also condemned were a brand new Hyundai Starex and a used Renault black van. The vehicles arrived on separate occasions at the Port of Manila, Manila International Container Port and at the Port of Cebu. They came from the US, Belgium, Japan, and Korea.

The destruction of the vehicles was in line with the directive of President Rodrigo Duterte to warn all smugglers to pay the tax for their vehicle importations or have them crushed by a bulldozer.

This is also to stop the fixing schemes of the smugglers conniving with some Customs employees in the usual public auction of seized cars.

Guerrero gave recognition to the anti- smuggling efforts of the Manila International Container Port, the Port of Manila and the Port of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

Also recognized for their contributions on anti-smuggling were the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS), Enforcement and Security Service (ESS), X-Ray Inspection Project (XIP), and Customs Anti-Illegal Drugs Task Force (CAIDTF), and the Port of Cagayan de Oro for the successful re-exportation of illegal South Korean wastes.

Previously, the BoC also destroyed 20 high-end vehicles worth P61 million and also 116 units of smuggled vehicles and motorcycles worth P34,7 million.

These vehicles include brands such as a classic 1969 Corvette Stingray, Jaguar, Audi, Mercedes Benz, Pajero, BMW, Ford Explorer, and Lexus.

NHL exec Colin Campbell explains league’s schedule goals in Canada

NHL senior executive vice president Colin Campbell says the league would like to try to preserve as many full-capacity home games as possible for Canadian fans, but acknowledges other factors are at play in redoing the schedule during the current COVID-19 surge. “You’d like to give the fans the opportunity to go to as many games as they can. They’ve already been shortchanged in the last year and a half … shortchanged completely watching hockey here in Canada,” Campbell said in an interview on the Real Kyper and Bourne show on Sportsnet 590 The Fan on Friday. “It’s a rite of passage to watch the world juniors this time of year for all young kids. I remember growing up watching it. Now, it’s cancelled. We’re trying to save as much as we can and delay it.” The NHL postponed nine more games on Friday because of arena capacity issues in Canada — with teams being allowed anywhere from zero fans (Montreal Canadiens) to 50 per cent capacity (Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Can...
