Some areas in modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) will return to the stricter general community quarantine (GCQ) starting February 1, Malacañang said on Thursday.
Palace spokesman Harry Roque Jr. said the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) was due to meet on Thursday to discuss new quarantine classifications for Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
Roque said the IATF-EID recommendation will then be presented to Rodrigo Duterte, who will make the new quarantine rules official.
“Napakahirap po kasi magsalita kasi talagang nirereserba natin kay Presidente ‘yung desisyon (It’s hard to speak because we don’t want to preempt the President),” Roque said in an interview with DZMM radio.
Roque said the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and Region 11 (Davao Region), which both have a “moderate risk” classification in terms of coronavirus bed utilization, were candidates for a stricter lockdown.
A possible quarantine reclassification came as the single-day total of new Covid-19 cases reached 2,245 on Wednesday, the highest since November 8.
The new cases raised the total coronavirus infections to 518,407.
Topping the list of areas with the most number of additional infections are Baguio City and Cebu City with 121 cases each, Davao City with 102, Quezon City with 87, and Pangasinan with 81.
The Department of Health (DoH) also reported 95 additional Covid-related deaths for a total of 10,481 fatalities. There were also 140 additional recovered patients, or a total of 475,542 recoveries.
The DoH has endorsed a stricter quarantine in CAR, which is under MGCQ.
Twelve cases of the new coronavirus variant were earlier detected in Bontoc, Mountain Province.
Relatedly, Metro Manila mayors favor extending the region’s GCQ status amid the detection of the new Covid-19 variant in the country, Metro Manila Council Chairman and Parañaque City Mayor Edwin Olivarez said.
“Kung magluluwag po tayo, napakahirap po na magkakaroon tayo ng spike lalong paparating na ang vaccine (If we ease the quarantine, it could lead to a spike in cases at a time with the vaccines are arriving),” Olivarez said during an interview with DZMM radio.
