Pacquiao removed as WBA ‘super’ champ

The World Boxing Association (WBA) has stripped eight division world champion and senator Manny Pacquiao of his super welterweight title that he won in 2019 because he was unable to defend it.

The WBA announced on its website on Friday that Pacquiao is now a “champion in recess” and the belt was subsequently given to Cuba’s Yordenis Ugas.

“Filipino Manny Pacquiao has been named Champion in Recess by the World Boxing Association (WBA) in a resolution issued by the Championships Committee, while Cuban Yordenis Ugas was promoted to Welterweight Super Champion,” the WBA said.

WBA rules and regulations state that a champion who cannot defend his title may be named a champion in recess.

“Rule C.22-24 states that when a champion is unable to defend the belt for medical, legal or other reasons beyond his control, he may be named champion in recess. The medical reasons must be documented before the WBA Medical Committee, while the legal reasons must be evidenced before the legal director and the Championships Committee.”

Ugas, in an Instagram post on Saturday, called Pacquiao a legend but tells him not to “hijack a championship.”

“Manny Pacquiao is a legend, and he will always be a champion, but you cannot, according to your story, hijack a championship,” the Cuban boxer wrote. “This gives fans a chance to see a great unification fight at 147 pounds. I don’t want this position for easy fights. My next fight, I want a unification. I am a warrior committed to his career and his hobby, that he has fought and won every penny and every opportunity.”

Ugas has also thanked the WBA for elevating him to the super welterweight title.

“Thank God; today is a great day for me, my team, my family, fans and for Cuban boxing,” he wrote. “Thanks to the WBA for elevating me to Super Champion and doing the best for the sport.”

Pacquiao won the WBA Welterweight Super Champion belt back in July 2019 after defeating American boxer Keith Thurman.

NHL exec Colin Campbell explains league’s schedule goals in Canada

NHL senior executive vice president Colin Campbell says the league would like to try to preserve as many full-capacity home games as possible for Canadian fans, but acknowledges other factors are at play in redoing the schedule during the current COVID-19 surge. “You’d like to give the fans the opportunity to go to as many games as they can. They’ve already been shortchanged in the last year and a half … shortchanged completely watching hockey here in Canada,” Campbell said in an interview on the Real Kyper and Bourne show on Sportsnet 590 The Fan on Friday. “It’s a rite of passage to watch the world juniors this time of year for all young kids. I remember growing up watching it. Now, it’s cancelled. We’re trying to save as much as we can and delay it.” The NHL postponed nine more games on Friday because of arena capacity issues in Canada — with teams being allowed anywhere from zero fans (Montreal Canadiens) to 50 per cent capacity (Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Can...

Why some NHL games are being played, but not others

With the Omicron variant tearing through the sports world, the NHL has had to adapt by postponing some games while playing others in front of, in some cases, a maximum of 1,000 fans in Canada. So why are some games being played in Canada and others are not? As with everything these days, it’s complicated. TV rights holders, including Sportsnet in Canada, are partially driving those decisions. But not entirely. The Toronto Maple Leafs , for example, had to have their Jan. 3 game with Carolina postponed, but intended on holding their Jan. 1 game vs. the Senators and their Jan. 5 game against the Oilers, partially to placate Sportsnet. But, according to reporting by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, when the province of Ontario announced new restrictions for public gatherings that limited crowds to 1,000 fans or less, the league offered the Leafs the option of postponing the two upcoming games. The Leafs wanted to go through with the games, Friedman said, because they hadn’t played a ...
