‘Follow health rules during Christmas’

SEN. Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go has urged the public to continue complying with health protocols and avoid holding mass gatherings during the holiday season as the threat of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) remains.

In an interview after leading the distribution of assistance to typhoon victims in Plaridel, Bulacan on Friday, Go said he understands the important role of family gatherings during Christmas, but the safety and lives of loved ones must come first.

“I discourage any party, celebration. [Partygoers] could spread disease among themselves,” the chairman of the Senate Committee on Health and Demography said in Taglish.

He earlier urged the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) to provide the public proper guidance on safety protocols, particularly the holding of gatherings as Christmas season approaches.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque 3rd said as agreed upon by the IATF-EID, Metro Manila is still under general community quarantine, which allows some activities, including mall sales, to reenergize the economy.

When it comes to Christmas parties and similar gatherings, Duque noted that the IATF-EID would have to revisit its guidelines to avoid a spike in Covid-19 cases.

Go said the government is slowly reopening the economy while still imposing necessary health protocols to protect Filipinos amid the pandemic.

He advised Filipinos to continue complying with health protocols while a vaccine for the virus is not yet widely available.

Go said President Rodrigo Duterte will prioritize the less fortunate in the vaccination program, along with the medical frontliners and other vulnerable sectors.

On Sunday, the Department of Health reported 2,076 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 429,864.

The department said only 5.3 percent or 22,867 of the total infections are active cases.

Most patients have only mild symptoms at 82.9 percent.

The number of virus survivors reached 398,624 after the agency reported 10,579 more recoveries.

There were 40 new fatalities, bringing the death toll to 8,373.

The Philippines has the second highest virus count in Southeast Asia, behind Indonesia, which had 527,999 cases.

Worldwide, there are 62.2 million Covid-19 cases.

NHL exec Colin Campbell explains league’s schedule goals in Canada

NHL senior executive vice president Colin Campbell says the league would like to try to preserve as many full-capacity home games as possible for Canadian fans, but acknowledges other factors are at play in redoing the schedule during the current COVID-19 surge. “You’d like to give the fans the opportunity to go to as many games as they can. They’ve already been shortchanged in the last year and a half … shortchanged completely watching hockey here in Canada,” Campbell said in an interview on the Real Kyper and Bourne show on Sportsnet 590 The Fan on Friday. “It’s a rite of passage to watch the world juniors this time of year for all young kids. I remember growing up watching it. Now, it’s cancelled. We’re trying to save as much as we can and delay it.” The NHL postponed nine more games on Friday because of arena capacity issues in Canada — with teams being allowed anywhere from zero fans (Montreal Canadiens) to 50 per cent capacity (Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Can...
