Vardy vs Rooney: ‘Wagatha Christie’ trial to begin in High Court

The high-profile libel case – branded “Wagatha Christie” – between Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney is finally set to go to trial on Tuesday. Mrs Rooney accused Mrs Vardy of leaking “false stories” about her private life to the media in October 2019 , after she said she carried out a months-long “sting operation”. The wife of former England star Wayne Rooney was dubbed “Wagatha Christie” when she publicly claimed her fellow footballer’s wife shared three fake stories she had posted on her personal Instagram account with The Sun newspaper. The fake stories included Mrs Rooney travelling to Mexico for a “gender selection” procedure, her planning to return to TV and the basement flooding at her home. Mrs Rooney wrote: “I have saved and screenshotted all the original stories which clearly show just one person has viewed them. “It’s ………. Rebekah Vardy’s account.” Mrs Rooney’s post was widely shared and heavily parodied on social media at the time, including by the Twitter account of

Manchester City announce agreement for Erling Haaland transfer

Manchester City has reached an agreement in principle with Borussia Dortmund to sign Erling Haaland with just personal terms needing to be finalized with the striker. As one of the rising stars of world soccer, the Norway international will be the English club’s belated replacement for Sergio Aguero. City issued a brief statement on Tuesday confirming the pending deal but rivals did more talking on what could be the biggest transfer ahead of next season. “This transfer will set new levels, let me say it like this,” Jurgen Klopp told British broadcaster Sky Sports. It is being widely reported that the release clause of 75 million euros ($79 million) in Haaland’s contract with Dortmund will be activated this week. Haaland could then bid farewell to Dortmund’s fans at the team’s last game of the season, at home to Hertha Berlin on Saturday. Sebastian Kehl, who is taking over as Dortmund sports director, told Sport1 on Sunday that there should be “clarity in the next week” about Haa

PL Predictions: Back Liverpool to win low-scoring Villa clash

Our tipster Jones Knows is back to preview a huge midweek of Premier League football and is backing Liverpool to edge a low-scoring game with Aston Villa Aston Villa vs Liverpool, Tuesday 8pm, live on Sky Sports Image: Aston Villa vs Liverpool, live on Sky Sports A Liverpool victory is the most likely outcome here but Aston Villa do have the defensive capabilities to make this a tricky task. Tuesday 10th May 7:30pm Kick off 8:00pm Since Steven Gerrard was appointed in November, Aston Villa have consistently posted top-six standard defensive displays. Their expected goals against data has them averaging 1.04 goals conceded per 90 minutes which has them as the fourth-best defence in that metric over a 23-game period. An impressive feat from Gerrard and his defensive block gave Jurgen Klopp’s team plenty of problems in the reverse fixture that was won courtesy of a Mohamed Salah penalty. With such two sturdy defences on show in this game and Klopp’s men in ‘job done

Canadians Abroad Roundup: Will Laryea be next Canadian in Premier League?

January was a transformative month for the Canadian men’s national team. Wins in Honduras and at home to the U.S. – coupled with the El Salvador road victory on Feb. 2 – all but guaranteed its qualification for the 2022 World Cup. Fans could start monitoring flights to Doha with relative comfort. An arguably superior development transpired that month, too. Nine Canadian-eligible players secured loans or permanent transfers to new clubs in the transfer window. Many of those moves were steps up in terms of the quality and size of the respective teams. For instance, Stephen Eustaquio joined Porto on loan with an option to buy from Pacos de Ferreira. Now he’s transitioned from mid-table obscurity to a league title and into the Champions League, provided reports are correct and he joins the Dragoes permanently. Ike Ugbo was loaned to Troyes in Ligue 1 from Genk, an admittedly big club in Belgium with a rich history. But moving to a top-five European league, especially to a club under t

Why are the Panthers having a hard time against the Capitals in Round 1?

With a 3-2 win in overtime, the Florida Panthers have tied up their Round 1 series against the Washington Capitals. At face value, there isn’t really a red flag in sight. Tied series through four games, sure, what’s there to worry about? The Capitals’ two wins were pretty lopsided, by a score of 4-2 and 6-1 and Florida hasn’t led the series yet. In fact, the Presidents’ Trophy winning Panthers were just one goal away from being pushed to the brink of elimination against a team with an aging core and unstable goaltending. So what’s gone wrong for the team many had as a favourite to win it all in the early-goings of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and were there any positive signs, aside from the score, in Game 4? 5-on-5 play The Panthers were the best offensive team in the regular season at 5-on-5. No one created more quality offence than Florida’s league leading 3.25 expected goals for per 60, and no one matched their scoring with 3.33 goals per 60. Along with being a top-five team i
