Senators add to Canadiens’ woes, pushing Montreal skid to eight

OTTAWA — For a kid from Arizona, it doesn’t get much bigger than scoring the game-winning goal on a night that honoured one of the game’s biggest legends. Mark Kastelic scored his first career goal and his second of the night held up as the winner as the Ottawa Senators defeated the Montreal Canadiens 6-4. “ That was so much fun," said Kastelic. “Probably the most memorable game of my career and super exciting to do it with the guys in that room. They’re so supportive and just a fun atmosphere to be in.” Kastelic won’t soon forget his first goal as he ended up fighting Michael Pezzetta before he even knew he had scored. “I have not done that before, so that’s a first, but in my defence, I did not know I scored. So that’s just kind of a funny situation.” Prior to the start of the game, the Senators shared a video tribute, followed by a moment of silence to honour Montreal Canadiens legend Guy Lafleur, who passed away Friday. Despite both teams playing out the final few...

Ten Hag focused on Ajax but spending time on Man Utd plans

Ajax boss Erik ten Hag says he is spending time making plans for Manchester United ahead of becoming manager at the end of the season. Ten Hag, who was confirmed by United as their new manager on Thursday, still has to decide on who will be part of his coaching staff at Old Trafford and is facing a big summer of recruitment with many players expected to leave. But he still has a title race to win in the Eredivisie with Ajax, who secured a late 1-0 victory over NEC on Saturday afternoon to move seven points clear of PSV at the top of the table. Thursday 28th April 7:00pm Kick off 7:45pm Speaking after the game, Ten Hag said: “I always keep focused on the job I have to do, it doesn’t matter what’s around me. Pressed on whether he had spent time organising his plans for United, Ten Hag added: “You always spend time on the future, but my head and my energy is for Ajax.” While Ajax march towards a third title in four years, United’s chances of qualifying for next season’s C...

Flames continue to bring playoff intensity amid dominant stretch at Saddledome

Arms raised and glare fixed skyward, Elias Lindholm exhaled deeply. He’d just scored his 40 th  of the season and the relief he felt was evident. Another game, another milestone for the Calgary Flames . Who said these last few contests don’t mean much? They sure do to the 27-year-old centre, who joined linemate Matthew Tkachuk to form the first Flames duo since 1993 to hit the 40-goal mark.  “Last game I had a lot of chances and he (Thatcher Demko) made a nice save in the first period – I felt at that point I didn’t know if I was going to get another one this season,” smiled Lindholm, when asked about the hallmark moment. “It was nice to get one. It’s obviously a good number.” He now has twice as many goals as perennial Selke Trophy frontrunner Patrice Bergeron, whose plus-18 rating is less than a third of the +58 Lindholm is sporting this season. Defending Selke champ, Alex Barkov, has one less goal than Lindholm and is a formidable +38. The merits of Lindhol...

Blue Jays starter Alek Manoah battles back yet again in win over Astros

HOUSTON — We’ve seen these outings from Alek Manoah before. A little scattershot out of the gates. A little all over the place early. Muttering to himself; pounding the glove; kicking at his landing spot on the mound. It was just one of those days Saturday, as Manoah coughed up a two-spot to the Houston Astros in the first, letting Michael Brantley reach off a mis-located heater after getting ahead, 0-2. And then Alex Bregman took him deep to left on another 0-2 pitch, this time a sinker that didn’t run quite far enough in on the third baseman’s hands. But then we saw that other thing we’ve seen from the young Toronto Blue Jays right-hander so many times before — a rally. A different guy in the second. A more aggressive version of himself, pounding the zone with fastballs that were suddenly coming out at 95-96 mph after sitting around 93-94 an inning prior. A 27-pitch first inning all but washed away with a 12-pitch second and 11-pitch third. A blink of the eye and it’s the si...

Could Michael Bunting injury pave way for Maple Leafs super line?

SUNRISE, Fla. – They were the six words the Six doesn’t want to hear. “He’s going to miss some time.” That was Toronto Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe’s update on injured top-line winger Michael Bunting after Saturday’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers . Bunting leads all NHL rookies in scoring with 23 goals and 63 points. He’s drawing more penalties than all but two other players in the league. And he’s the scrappy, chirpy, greasy complement to Toronto’s most dynamic duo. “Bunts doesn’t get enough love for what he does for us,” Mitch Marner said, after seeing his linemate go down early in the first period with what appears to be a lower-body injury. With regulars Jake Muzzin (undisclosed), Ondrej Kase (concussion) and Rasmus Sandin (knee) already nursing injuries, MVP Auston Matthews recovering from an ailment of his own, and the playoffs starting in roughly a week, the timing of Bunting’s injury is worrisome. But something interesting happened Saturday after Bunting...

Were Man Utd right to feel aggrieved over VAR calls?

Ralf Rangnick questioned the refereeing and VAR over four key decisions during Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday. “We were at least unlucky with those three or four moments,” he said. Image: Ralf Rangnick felt key decisions went against Man Utd at Arsenal Did he have a point? Let’s take a look… Cedric Soares’ handball Jadon Sancho went on one of his trademark mazy runs and sent Cedric Soares back towards his own goal. The Arsenal full-back lost his balance and stumbled to the ground before appearing to stop the ball with his hand. Sancho appealed for what could have been a free-kick or a penalty, with the incident right on the edge of the penalty area. However, referee Craig Pawson waved away the appeals, and there was no VAR intervention either. Rangnick highlighted the incident after the game, saying: “There was another handball issue in the first half, Jadon Sancho was involved.” Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player ...

Raptors show trademark fighting spirit to stay alive in series vs. 76ers

The win that matters most to the long-term future of the Toronto Raptors came before the ball ever went up, when Scottie Barnes walked to center court at Scotiabank Arena, was presented with the NBA’s rookie-of-the-year award from Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri and held the trophy aloft for the crowd.  “Scottie, Scottie, Scottie,” came the chant.  It won’t be the last time in his career Barnes here’s his name rain down from the rafters at Scotiabank Arena. And it’s easy to imagine so much more, like “MVP, MVP, MVP.”  The trophy only confirms what those who have watched Barnes’ rookie season unfold, and more, importantly, those who have worked alongside him have come to realize: Barnes is that rare combination of role-player mentality paired with world-class athletic ability, brought to the forefront by just the right combination of character, confidence, and humility. Mix it all together and what do you got? “You get a superstar type player,” said ...
