Bright to captain England for World Cup qualifiers

Chelsea defender Millie Bright will captain England for this month’s Women’s World Cup qualifiers. England play Austria on Saturday and Latvia next Tuesday, but are without regular skipper Steph Houghton and her deputy Leah Williamson due to injury. Arsenal’s Williamson has filled in for Manchester City’s Houghton in the previous four qualifiers, but is not available to head coach Sarina Wiegman after suffering a hamstring injury against Tottenham. Bright becomes the second captain during Wiegman’s short spell in charge of the Lionesses so far, as Houghton is yet to feature under the former Netherlands head coach. Asked how it felt to know she would be taking the armband for the games, the 28-year-old said at a press conference on Tuesday: “It’s amazing. “I think no matter what age you are, how many times you’ve done it before, it’s always going to be a huge honour representing your country, and not only that, but then leading the girls out for this camp is obviously an exciting ...

Tom Brady throws for 307 yards, two TDs as Buccaneers beat Giants

TAMPA, Fla. — Tom Brady stepped up in the pocket to scramble, high-stepped a tackler, slid hard for a first down and got up pumping his arm and screaming. That’s one way to erase the taste of losing. Brady threw for 307 yards and two touchdowns and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the New York Giants 30-10 on Monday night. The Super Bowl champion Buccaneers (7-3) snapped a two-game skid as Brady avoided dropping three in a row for the first time since 2002. “We’re at a decent point but we can play a lot better than we’ve played,” Brady said. “Hoping our best football is ahead of us.” Brady started 10 for 10 before misfiring on a deep ball to Mike Evans. On the next play, the 44-year-old scrambled 10 yards on third-and-4 to extend Tampa’s drive that ended with Ryan Succop kicking a 25-yard field goal that made it 10-3. “Eleven-yard run. They don’t happen very often so I do remember how far they go,” Brady said, unaware it was officially ruled 10 yards. Rob Gronkowski joked that h...

Coventry City: Home again and bouncing back

Across the last two seasons, all four meetings between Coventry and Birmingham took place at St Andrew’s. Disputes behind the scenes – similar to those that had forced them to call Northampton’s Sixfields Stadium home in 2013/14 – saw the Sky Blues call upon their near neighbours to facilitate a ground-share for the 2019/20 and 2020/21 campaigns, the latter of which saw them return to the Championship for the first time in eight seasons. Mark Robins’ side’s troubles on the road were offset by their surprisingly strong home form last term and, despite periods of inconsistency, they stayed well clear of the bottom three and finished 12 points above it when the season concluded in May. On Tuesday night, in a game live on Sky Sports Football, the pair will face off at the Coventry Building Society Arena for the first time since a 10-year agreement for Coventry to return was signed back in March. Tuesday 23rd November 7:30pm Kick off 7:45pm Here, we take a look at the rise o...

Rory Dames resigns as Red Stars coach amid abuse allegations

CHICAGO — Rory Dames resigned Monday as coach of the Chicago Red Stars, and the team said it has launched an independent review of player health and safety and the team’s culture after The Washington Post quoted several players saying Dames was emotionally abusive. Dames led the Red Stars to the National Women’s Soccer League title game, which Chicago lost on Sunday to the Washington Spirit. Washington won the title under an interim coach after coach Richie Burke was fired in September for violating the league’s anti-harassment policy. Spirit players had said Burke was verbally abusive. Dames is the latest of several NWSL coaches to face allegations of misconduct. Lisa Baird resigned as the league’s commissioner on Oct. 1 after two former players came forward with allegations of harassment, including sexual coercion, against North Carolina Courage coach Raul Riley, who was immediately fired by the Courage. The league has launched an independent investigation into its handling of ...
