76ers Embiid on Raptors: The way they defend me has never changed

| April 14, 2022, 9:11 PM April 14, 2022, 9:11 PM While the Toronto Raptors have managed to do as good a job as any team against Joel Embiid over the years, the Philadelphia 76ers big man insists he knows what to expect heading into their playoff series. “The way they defend me has never changed. They just play recklessly. Sending three guys on me as soon as the ball is in the air,” Embiid told reporters in Philadelphia on Thursday. “That made me better, honestly, over the years, just playing against them and watching them. They definitely made me a better playmaker … But there’s still a lot of ways I can attack them. It doesn’t have to be iso. I can just get position on them. Use my size and my weight to try to take advantage. I think I know what I have to do. I just have to execute.” Much has been made of the Raptors’ success in limiting Embiid, the NBA’s leading scorer this season. Over the past three seasons, Embiid has averaged 28.1 points a game on 50.3 pe

NI boss Shiels apologises after saying women more emotional than men

Northern Ireland boss Kenny Shiels has apologised for his post-match comments after the 5-0 loss to England in which he described women as being “more emotional than men”. Shiels claimed that women’s teams tend to concede goals in quick succession in part because of an “emotional imbalance” in response to conceding once. “I wish to apologise for my comments made in the post-match press conference last night. I am sorry for the offence that they have caused,” Shiels said. “Last night was a special occasion for the women’s game in Northern Ireland and I am proud to manage a group of players who are role models for so many girls, and boys, across the country. Big Six all to qualify for CL? Why many PL clubs oppose wildcards

There is a strong feeling among Premier League clubs outside the Big Six that UEFA’s plans to offer wildcards for the Champions League is like “introducing a form of the European Super League via the back door”. The issue was discussed by UEFA at its Executive Committee meeting last week, and a vote will be taken at the UEFA Congress in Vienna on May 10. It is expected to be ratified then. When it is, for the first time in history, European football qualification will be based on something other than the season that has just finished. Hughes scores OT winner as Canucks edge Golden Knights in crucial game

VANCOUVER — Quinn Hughes scored 51 seconds into overtime and the Vancouver Canucks kept their dim playoff dreams alive with a 5-4 win over the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday.  The result moves Vancouver within three points of Vegas, with both teams grasping for the Western Conference wild card spots.  Elias Pettersson had  goal and a pair of assists for the Canucks (36-28-10) in regulation, while Bo Horvat had one of each. Vasily Podkolzin and Brad Richardson rounded out the scoring for the home side, which has won four straight games.  Shea Theodore knotted the game with a pair of goals in the third period, Alec Martinez had a goal and an assist and Michael Amadio put away a goal for the Golden Knights (40-30-4).  Vancouver got a stellar 41 save performance from Thatcher Demko and Robin Lehner stopped 22-of-27 shots for Vegas.  The Golden Knights pulled Lehner with 1:46 left on the game clock in favour of an extra attacker. With 41.4 seconds to go, Theodore launched a rocke

Man Utd Spurs want West Broms Johnstone

Manchester United and Tottenham will battle it out for the signature of Sam Johnstone in the summer, after the England goalkeeper allows his West Brom contract to run its course. Johnstone – who’s won three senior caps for England – is keen to get back into the Premier League, and has refused the offer of a new deal at the Hawthorns. A number of other clubs, including Southampton, are also thought to be interested. Steve Bruce admitted at the weekend that he expects Johnstone to leave at the end of the season, rather than stay and fight for promotion with Albion. Image: West Brom are out of the play-off race in the Championship and Johnstone is keen on a return to the Premier League Johnstone came through the Manchester United academy, and officials have kept a close eye on his progress since allowing him to leave the club four years ago. Kane on scrum with Hartman: I definitely would have liked to get loose

| April 13, 2022, 12:41 AM April 13, 2022, 12:41 AM Tensions between the Edmonton Oilers and Minnesota Wild reached a boiling point Tuesday night when Ryan Hartman and his teammates took exception to Evander Kane going after Kirill Kaprizov . Midway through the third period, Kaprizov and Kailer Yamamoto engaged with each other away from the play, which led to Kane coming to the aid of his teammate. As the Oilers forward cross-checked Kaprizov, multiple members of the Wild went after Kane, which resulted in a scrum. Hartman attempted to pull Kane out of the crowd and tried to engage in a fight, but the linesman would not allow the two players to drop the gloves. As they were separated, Hartman gave Kane the middle finger and the linesmen escorted both players off the ice. “It goes to show, we had five guys in there. They didn’t have one guy in there to help him,” Hartman told reporters about the incident. “I don’t think any of their guys are going to defend him.” Ha

Nets top Cavaliers to clinch seventh seed in Eastern Conference playoffs

NEW YORK — Kyrie Irving had 34 points and 12 assists, Kevin Durant added 25 points and 11 assists, and the Brooklyn Nets took the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference by beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 115-108 on Tuesday night in the play-in opener. The Nets raced to a 20-point lead after one quarter and turned the Cavaliers away time and time again to earn a matchup with No. 2 seed Boston in a series that begins Sunday. Irving made his first 12 shots before a 3-pointer rimmed out in the fourth quarter. He finished 12 for 15. A preseason NBA Finals favourite who sputtered through a turbulent season and were in 10th place entering the last week of the regular season, the Nets have run off five straight wins. With Durant and Irving, they are far more dangerous than the usual No. 7 seed. And both are willing to give the ball to teammates who are capitalizing when they get it. Bruce Brown had 18 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, while Andre Drummond scored 16 points. Darius

Godfrey still out to prove people wrong

Ben Godfrey is at an adidas photo-shoot at Altrincham football club, alongside players from Everton and Manchester City. He is more reflective than most. For some Premier League players, this is a far cry from what they are used to. For him, it is a reminder. “It takes me back to my York days,” Godfrey tells Sky Sports as he surveys the stands, the cabins and the local advertising boards. “This is where it all started for me.” At 24, he is already an established Premier League player with Everton and a senior international with England. The caps are at home. “Until my family come around and have their hands all over them.” But before all this, his career in the game was in the balance. Godfrey was released by Middlesbrough. “It felt a little bit like the dream was over.” After that, there were trials with Barnsley, Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United. None led to a contract. “For them to say no was a massive confidence-breaker, really,” he adds. “It looked like the end of the jo

Timberwolves erupt in celebration after stunning Clippers with comeback win in play-in

MINNEAPOLIS — Anthony Edwards and D’Angelo Russell combined for 59 points to help the Minnesota Timberwolves overcome a rough night for Karl-Anthony Towns and beat the Los Angeles Clippers 109-104 in a play-in game on Tuesday night. Edwards scored 30 points with five 3-pointers and Russell had 29 points and six assists to send the Wolves to the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference and a first-round matchup with Memphis. “Just utilizing what we have,” Russell said. “We’ve got a lot of pieces that complement each other.” Paul George finished with 34 points after shooting 2 for 10 in the first half for the Clippers, who have a second chance to make the playoffs with a home game on Friday for the No. 8 seed against either New Orleans or San Antonio. Reggie Jackson (17 points) and Norman Powell (16 points) did their part in stretches, but the Clippers failed to put the Timberwolves away when they were struggling through the first half. Towns had only 11 points on 3-for-11 shooting a

England captain Leah Williamson and the five-day penalty wait

Leah Williamson will walk out at a sold-out Windsor Park on Tuesday night as the new England captain and it seems Belfast is a city that provides her with happy, albeit nerve-wracking, memories. Seven years ago this week Williamson was playing for the U19 team in a tournament at Seaview stadium when one of the most unusual incidents in world football occurred. Trailing 2-1 in a game against Norway, Williamson scored an injury-time penalty only for the German referee to rule it out for player encroachment. Follow Northern Ireland vs England on Sky Sports Follow Northern Ireland Women vs England Women in our dedicated live blog across Sky Sports’ digital platforms. Rather than oversee a retake, Norway were given a free-kick and England lost the game. In an unprecedented move, UEFA ruled the final seconds of the game had to be replayed five days later. Not our finest hour: Sloppy Oilers no match for surging Wild

ST. PAUL, Minn. — They hold the Minnesota State Fair here in St. Paul every summer, a massive affair that at one time was the second largest U.S. State Fair behind only Texas. There, after gazing upon the winners for Minnesota’s fattest pig, most handsome rooster and the most productive dairy cow in the state, you can nosh on about 50 different delicacies served “on a stick” — from tasty pickerel to deep fried Mars bars. Well, make the Edmonton Oilers No. 51. The Oilers were skewered 5-1 Tuesday by the Wild, on a night where we got a close look at what happens when you play loose and lazy against an elite National Hockey League team. “Definitely not what we wanted to transpire tonight,” said Evander Kane, who capped his night with a misconduct in a tussle with Ryan Hartman that was stymied by an overzealous linesman. “The goals that they scored, a great majority we handed to them. It definitely didn’t feel as lopsided as the score indicates. But at the same time, we can’t be givi
