Barcelona were held 1-1 at home by Napoli in the first leg of their Europa League knockout stage playoff tie on Thursday. Barca dominated proceedings but found themselves a goal down to the Italians after Piotr Zielinski finished off a counter-attack in the 29th minute. Barca forward Ferran Torres equalised shortly before the hour mark from the penalty spot after the video assistant referee had spotted a very subtle Juan Jesus’ handball from a Adama Traore cross inside the area. Image: Napoli’s Piotr Zielinski celebrates his opener Barca were on the front foot throughout with their brand new attacking trident formed by new signings Torres, Traore and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but missed several chances to take the lead. Napoli held on as they were bombarded in the last ten minutes, with Torres and substitutes Luuk de Jong and Ousmane Dembele missing chance after chance in front of Alex Meret’s goal. The second leg will be played at Napoli next week. Image: Napoli’s Ju

Beckie stunner holds Lionesses | Wiegman: We must be more ruthless

Millie Bright’s brilliant volley was cancelled out by a stunning Janine Beckie strike as England Women played out an entertaining 1-1 draw with Canada Women in their opening match of the Arnold Clark Cup. England were dominant in the first half at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium and deservedly took the lead in the 22nd minute when Chelsea defender Bright fired in from inside the box after Fran Kirby passed a short corner to Alex Greenwood. But Olympic champions Canada started the second period brightly and equalised when Manchester City forward Beckie struck a goal-of-the-season contender from the edge of the box (55). Image: Canada forward Janine Beckie celebrates with team-mates after scoring a stunning equaliser Both teams pushed for a winner late on but the match ended level, just as Germany’s earlier clash with Spain had done. The result means Sarina Wiegman’s winning start to life as England Women head coach came to an end after six games, although the Canadians rep

Return of former Flames captain Mark Giordano no ordinary homecoming

This is not your average, run-of-the-mill homecoming. He isn’t your average, run-of-the-mill defenceman. Over the course of his storied ascension to captaincy in Calgary, Mark Giordano became one of the most beloved Flames in franchise history. So, yes, there will be a lengthy video tribute welcoming him back to the Saddledome Saturday when he makes his first regular season appearance as captain with the Seattle Kraken . The crowd will stand to salute the 38-year-old for his 15 years of yeoman’s service, as one of the fiercest and intense competitors the organization has ever seen. As someone who invested so much of his time in the community, the man who served eight years as captain here, will likely get emotional. After all, it wasn’t his choice to leave, making this return embrace a bit more complicated. Thickening the plot was the faint hope some fans had that he could potentially return to Calgary as a Flame, either as a trade-deadline acquisition or as a free agent this

European hits & misses: Rangers strike fear into Europe

Watch out, Europe – Rangers are here Image: John Lundstram celebrates after scoring Rangers’ third Rangers’ victory at Borussia Dortmund on Thursday will go down as one of the greatest in their history. But in the more immediate future, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side showed they are a team to be feared in the Europa League. Dortmund were among the favourites to win the competition overall, but faced a rather unknown entity in Rangers – that is to say, the two sides had not played each other in European competition in 22 years. But the German side – currently second in the Bundesliga – never really turned up in what was the 1,000th game at the Westfalendstadion, but Rangers were never overawed by the occasion, location or opponent. They pressed Dortmund from the first minute and some poor defensive errors from the hosts allowed Rangers to surge into a lead. Dan-Axel Zagadou handled the ball for the opening penalty and turned the ball into his own net for Rangers’ fourth.

Jeff Gorton faces tall task of modernizing Canadiens on and off ice

MONTREAL – It’s one of the most captivating scenes in television history, if you can stomach watching another Aaron Sorkin character go off on a tangent. When fictional news anchor Will McAvoy (played by Jeff Daniels) berates a young woman for asking him to describe in one sentence why America is the greatest country in the world, in the opening scene of Sorkin’s The Newsroom , you can’t help but hang on his every word. Given that McAvoy blurts out close to 1,000 of them in a little over three minutes, I’ll just summarize for you. After giving a few half-hearted, fluffy answers and being coaxed to go into greater detail by the host of this three-person panel before a jam-packed student auditorium, McAvoy concludes that America is not the greatest country in the world anymore. He spits out damning evidence to support his claim and mocks everyone in the room for holding to the ideal that the country is still “star-spangled awesome,” as he puts it. He says that America “sure used to be

Celtic face battle to stay in ECL after home loss to Bodo/Glimt

Bodo/Glimt cruised to a 3-1 win at Celtic to hand the Norwegian champions the advantage heading into the second leg of their Europa Conference knockout play-off tie. The visitors made an early breakthrough after a well-worked move was finished by Runar Espejord, before Amahl Pellegrino’s close-range strike doubled their lead 10 minutes into the second half. Despite Daizen Maeda’s glancing header giving Celtic hope of a comeback with 11 minutes to go, Bodo/Glimt soon restored their two-goal advantage thanks to Hugo Vetlesen’s deflected strike. As a result, Kjetil Knutsen’s team now have one foot in the next round ahead of the return leg in Norway on February 24 as Celtic’s 17-game unbeaten run came to an end. Celtic suffer European blow after rare loss Celtic came up against opponents who arrived in Glasgow ready to play their hosts at their own game. Like Ange Postecoglou, visiting boss Knutsen started with three forwards supported by two attacking midfielders while his team were

Looking at how the Blue Jays can address their need for a back-end starter

It may not happen as soon as anyone would like, but eventually, MLB’s labour dispute will reach a resolution and the sport will move ahead with the 2022 regular season — or at least what’s left of it. The timeline will be rapid, with shotgun spring training camps in Florida and Arizona likely opening within a week of a new CBA being ratified, and opening day looming somewhere three-to-four weeks beyond that. That will leave front offices scrambling to fill big-league roster holes as soon as MLB’s transaction freeze is lifted, likely spurring the kind of wild activity that invigorated the sport last November. And the Toronto Blue Jays will be right in the thick of it, seeking to put the finishing touches on a win-now team being constructed to surpass the 91-win mark it achieved last season. With that in mind, this is the final installment of a three-part series looking at the biggest roster needs remaining for the 2022 Blue Jays and how the club’s front office could go about address
