Carey Price’s anxiety about on-ice future casts shadow over press conference

MONTREAL — This couldn’t have been where Carey Price wanted to be — in the Bell Centre press conference room, roughly a few hundred feet from the ice surface he hasn’t played on in close to seven months, staring into a camera for a Zoom availability, dressed in black, awaiting questions about his uncertain future and his checkered past. Sunday marked the 34-year-old goaltender’s first time speaking with the media since July 7, the day the Canadiens lost Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final and watched the Tampa Bay Lightning repeat as champions, and he has been through so much turmoil since without a single public comment made aside from an Instagram post in November. Price left Tampa Bay shattered, with the opportunity of his career having just squeaked through his pads, knowing he’d soon undergo knee surgery. Three weeks later, and two days before going under the knife, he was exposed in the Seattle Expansion Draft and left contemplating if he had played his last game as a Canadien.

Canada the team of destiny after win over U.S. in World Cup qualifying

The Canadian men’s national team can’t be beaten. The latest triumph, a 2-0 win over the United States in World Cup qualifying at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton on Sunday, might be the crowning moment. Les Rouges had already taken four of six points from Mexico, exorcised the demons in Honduras and Haiti, reached the Gold Cup semifinals for the first time since 2007 and proved they can overcome and manage adversity. All that remained was to end a 42-year drought and defeat the U.S. in a World Cup qualifier. You can punch another hole in that rewards card. It’s worth remembering that no one is supposed to maintain this level of consistency in Concacaf. It exists to trip up teams and test their mental resolve. Even Mexico and the U.S. experience the odd slip-up. Not Canada, though. At least, not yet. Here are three takeaways from another historic day for Canadian soccer: The David-Larin connection reignites Cyle Larin was on the fringes of the national team radar in 2019. He st

Barcelona in advanced talks with Arsenal over Aubameyang loan

Barcelona are in advanced talks with Arsenal over the loan signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The two clubs have not agreed the deal yet, but there is increased confidence it can be completed before the transfer window closes on Monday night. The deal would see Aubameyang move to the Nou Camp until the end of the season. Barcelona would not have an option to make Aubameyang’s switch permanent, and discussions continue over how much of the forward’s wages they would cover. Juventus also wanted to sign Aubameyang but their move was dependent on Atletico Madrid agreeing to cut Alvaro Morata’s loan spell short. As it stands, Morata will stay at Juventus. Arsenal are willing to allow Aubameyang to leave after stripping him of the captaincy in December following a disciplinary issue. The 32-year-old has not played for the club since December 6, and was left out of their squad for their warm-weather training camp in Dubai this week. Sky Sports News reported earlier in the window

Stafford, Rams defeat 49ers to set up Super Bowl vs. Bengals

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Travin Howard made a game-sealing interception with 1:09 to play, and the Los Angeles Rams rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to secure a spot in the Super Bowl at their home stadium next month with a thrilling 20-17 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC championship game Sunday night. Cooper Kupp caught two touchdown passes from Matthew Stafford for the star-studded Rams (15-5), who began the fourth quarter down 17-7 after wasting a multitude of scoring opportunities. But after Kupp’s second TD catch and a tying field goal on a drive extended by Jaquiski Tartt’s brutal dropped interception, the Rams drove for Matt Gay’s go-ahead, 30-yard field goal with 1:46 to play. Los Angeles’ defence then won it when Aaron Donald got hold of Jimmy Garoppolo and forced him to fling a pass toward JaMycal Hasty. The ball caromed high in the air off Hasty’s hands and came straight down to Howard — and the fourth-year pro didn’t miss it. “I’ve g

AFC Championship preview: Burrow needs ‘near perfect’ game to upset Chiefs

When it comes to quarterback play, the AFC is spoiled with young, elite talent. Last weekend’s absolutely incredible showdown between Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen is a testament to that, and this Sunday’s meeting between Mahomes and newcomer Joe Burrow could follow a similar template. Meaning, touchdowns — and lots of ’em. Like any playoff meeting, there are all kinds of storylines and matchups at play here — including, yes, a pretty great kicking battle if you’re into that! — but the focus here is no surprise: It’s Mahomes versus Burrow in a battle for a spot in the Super Bowl. Looking at the quarterbacks’ regular-season numbers, they’re not so far apart. Mahomes attempted (658) and completed (436) more passes than Burrow in 2021, but Burrow held the advantage when really airing it out — he led the league in yards per attempt (8.9) and finished just ahead of Mahomes in completions of 20-plus (60) and 40-plus (15) yards. Just 228 yards and three touchdowns separated Burrow from

Mane declared fit for Senegal’s AFCON quarter-final despite head injury

Sadio Mane has been declared fit for Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, just days after suffering a head knock that saw him taken to hospital. The Liverpool star clashed heads with opposing goalkeeper Vozinha – who was sent off – as Senegal beat Cape Verde in Tuesday’s last-16 clash in Bafoussam . Mane went on to score the first goal in the 2-0 win, but was later forced to leave the field, looking groggy and with swelling on the side of his face. The 29-year-old underwent examinations that showed no trace of concussion, according to Senegal’s doctor Abdourahmane Fdior. “All the symptoms he had on the pitch are gone,” said Fdior in a statement released by the Senegal FA. “His condition requires fairly close monitoring. Everything is normal on the X-ray.” Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player Highlights of the Africa Cup of Nations match between Senegal and Cape Verde On Wednesday, brain-injury charity
