Six goalies the Edmonton Oilers could target in potential trade

All right, so the Edmonton Oilers have a few problems. Wrote that intro to this piece more than two weeks ago and things are far worse and feel much more desperate now. The latest, a 6-0 loss to Florida that started so well and ended so meekly, was Edmonton’s seventh in a row and 13th in their past 15 games. Missing the playoffs may not be an option for a team like this, but at the moment it feels like the most likely outcome. Something has to give. A snakebitten offence has exacerbated the goalie issue, the Oilers’ most glaring weakness. GM Ken Holland’s decision to run back Mike Smith was always risky. Smith was fabulous for the Oilers last season, but it went against the grain of where he was trending and where age-related decline generally factors. Smith will turn 40 in March and has played only six games this season due to injury (he’s back on the sidelines again right now). That has put more pressure and workload on Mikko Koskinen than expected and while the goalie did a

Jota double fires Liverpool into Carabao final

Diogo Jota fired Liverpool into the final of the Carabao Cup as they beat Arsenal 2-0 on aggregate. Arsenal had held on for a resilient goalless draw with 10 men in the first leg seven days ago, but Diogo Jota broke their resistance on 19 minutes at the Emirates Stadium, and added a second with 13 minutes to go to seal the victory. The Gunners saw another player dismissed as Thomas Partey, back early from the Africa Cup of Nations after Ghana’s surprise exit, was sent off in the 90th minute for two bookings having only come on as a substitute 16 minutes earlier. Liverpool will face Chelsea in the final at Wembley on Sunday, February 27, with Jurgen Klopp one step closer to a first domestic cup trophy with the club. Brilliant Jota fires Liverpool into the final Arsenal started brilliantly – with Alexandre Lacazette hitting the crossbar from an early free-kick – but a warning shot from Liverpool changed the course of the game. Joel Matip was alert to poke in from Fabinho’s hea

Arteta: Arsenal postponed NLD for ‘right reasons’ | PL considers rule change

Mikel Arteta has hit back at Tottenham’s criticism of Arsenal for having Sunday’s north London derby postponed, saying the Gunners would never publicly question an opponent’s motives for requesting to have a game called off. Arsenal asked for the Premier League clash to be postponed, claiming they had “many players unavailable across our squad as a result of Covid, injuries and players away with their countries at AFCON (Africa Cup of Nations)”. The request was granted by the Premier League on Saturday, with Spurs then releasing a statement saying the decision was “very surprising” while their head coach Antonio Conte said on Tuesday that only Covid cases should be taken into account when the league chooses whether to call off matches. Arteta refused on Wednesday to reveal which players may be able to return for Thursday’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at home to Liverpool – live on Sky Sports – but strongly defended his club’s actions. “We didn’t have the players necessary

How Scott Rolen’s Blue Jays tenure strengthened his Hall of Fame case

Because of his inclusion in the trade that brought the Toronto Blue Jays Edwin Encarnacion, Scott Rolen will always be an important figure in the franchise’s history. While his tenure with the Blue Jays was short, it’s a vital part of his career as well – a career that could be recognized by a Hall of Fame induction on Tuesday. Despite a lack of gaudy offensive numbers, Rolen has the makings of a straightforward case. He is an eight-time Gold Glover who made seven All-Star Game appearances. He’s also a Rookie of the Year and World Series Champion. For the more analytically inclined, he has 70.1 WAR to his name and clears Jay Jaffe’s JAWS mark for the average Hall of Fame third baseman. Although the strength of that case is built largely on his work with the Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals , Rolen’s time with the Blue Jays is an underrated part of his legacy. The most obvious way Rolen’s Hall of Fame credentials were bolstered by his time in Toronto is his raw prod

Ontario sets timeline for indoor stadiums to gradually lift capacity restrictions

| January 20, 2022, 12:26 PM January 20, 2022, 12:26 PM The province of Ontario says it expects professional sports stadiums will be allowed to return to 100 per cent capacity in mid-March. The announcement came as part of a three-step plan the province outlined Thursday as it slowly re-opens from a strict public health lockdown imposed earlier this month. Currently, indoor sports facilities are allowed to operate at 50 per cent capacity or 500 spectators, whichever number is lower. That restriction will remain in place until Feb. 21, when the province says it expects spectator capacity will be able to rise to 50 per cent. The province adds that it expects capacity limits to be completely lifted on March 14. All proof of vaccination requirements and other public health measures will remain in place for fans attending games. The NHL announced a number of schedule changes Wednesday after nearly 100 games were postponed due to COVID-19 outbreaks and stadium capacity restri

With schedule revamped, Flames finally given chance to find their rhythm

As a farmer, you can bet Darryl Sutter complains about the weather with the best of ’em. As a coach, his bugaboo has been his club’s schedule. All season. Early on it was far too road-heavy, and of late it’s been scarcely populated due to postponements. Well, the NHL finally put the Jolly back into the Rancher with a revamped slate that now has the Flames playing seven-straight home games Feb. 9-21. “There was a time when you’re not even sure if you’re a part of the league, the way the schedule was,” smiled Sutter, whose club had ten games to reschedule due to their Christmas Covid count and the subsequent distaste for playing games in a dry, half-full arena. “I’m just glad it’s in place and that it’s official. To get seven of the eight (home games) in (mid-February) is good. My other wish was that the Chicago/Nashville back-to-back stayed as a back-to-back, which it did. All in all, I think we have to be happy with that.” With his club idle for all but two of the last 13 days,

Conte: ‘Important’ Bergwijn happy to stay

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte insists Steven Bergwijn is an important part of his plans after his stoppage-time heroics at Leicester. The Dutchman’s future at Tottenham has looked in doubt amid interest from Ajax and Sevilla ahead of the January transfer window. Spurs even rejected a £15m bid from Ajax for Bergwijn. Clubs in France and Germany were keen on Bergwijn and were considering an approach but Conte, who has preferred Heung-Min Son and Lucas Moura playing behind Harry Kane for much of his tenure, unleashed Bergwijn from the bench in the extraordinary 3-2 win over Leicester.
