Impressive Saints ease past Brentford in front of new owner

Southampton – in front of new owner Dragan Solak – hit four goals in a Premier League game for the first time this season as they thrashed Brentford 4-1 at St Mary’s. In a game that was originally postponed because of a Covid-19 outbreak in the Brentford squad, Southampton wasted no time, going ahead inside five minutes as Jan Bednarek found space at the near post to glance James Ward-Prowse’s corner into the far corner from close range. Only Norwich (15) have conceded the first goal in more Premier League games this term than Brentford (13), who have done so in 12 of their last 13 matches. Brentford struggled to get going as Southampton continued to pin them back, but Thomas Frank’s side did find an equaliser in the 23rd minute courtesy of their first attempt on goal in the match. Bryan Mbeumo did brilliantly to dig out a cross and it was met with a fine volley from Vitaly Janelt to beat Fraser Forster. Team news Mohammed Salisu returned from suspension to bolster Southam

7 Maple Leafs Takeaways: Toronto should be aggravated by blown leads

William Nylander opening and closing the scoring by beating Robin Lehner one-on-one. Ilya Mikheyev building upon his point-per-game contract year. Auston Matthews keeping pace in the Rocket race. And Jack Campbell salvaging two points on a night the Toronto Maple Leafs only mustered 18 shots on the Vegas Golden Knights . It all adds up to a sneaky (lucky? ugly?) road win for a group that has enough goaltending and game-breakers to scoop points that, at times, it might not deserve. “A great team,” Knights coach Peter DeBoer said. “I mean, their record [23-8-3] speaks for itself. Their game’s real. When you look at the analytics and dive in on them, they’re just a really solid hockey team.” Here are seven takeaways from a less-than-solid 4-3 shootout victory for the Leafs in Las Vegas. But they’ll take it and jet. Another third-period letdown Twice on this road trip the Maple Leafs carried a two-goal lead into the final period. Twice they had that lead snatched away them with

Hasenhuttl: Covid not ‘decisive factor’ in postponements

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl believes coronavirus is “not the decisive factor” in recent Premier League games being called off and wants the rules regarding postponements changed. Saints have had two games postponed this season, including this month’s match against Newcastle because of a number of Covid-19 cases and injuries in the Magpies squad. Leicester’s trip to Everton was postponed on Sunday due to a combination of coronavirus cases, injuries and Africa Cup of Nations call-ups. But Hasenhuttl, who feels January signings should be blocked from playing in any rearranged fixture , has questioned the reasons behind the recent postponements. Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s rearranged match against Brentford, he said: “I cannot speak about the situation there [Leicester]. I know our situation – we also have international call-ups, Covid cases and a lot of injuries, but before we cancel a game we sign a new goalkeeper [Willy Caballero] and this is what we do. “It was a clear me

Blue Jays hire first female coach as Jaime Vieira joins minor-league staff

| January 10, 2022, 4:17 PM January 10, 2022, 4:17 PM TORONTO – The Toronto Blue Jays have hired Jaime Vieira as a minor-league hitting coach, making the Georgetown, Ont., native the first woman to coach in the organization. Vieira, a former softball player and coach with the Humber Hawks who holds a Master of Science degree from York University, worked as a baseball operations research and development intern last year, helping prepare for the draft among other tasks. She first joined the club in 2019 as a programs specialist with the Jays Care Foundation and was promoted to a programs specialist a year later after developing and running a series of events for coaches and players. Where she ends up coaching this season wasn’t immediately clear as the club is still finalizing roles for its minor-league staff. But Vieira is the latest example of how accomplished women are unlocking doors to roles in the sport that until very recently had been exclusively for men. On Sun

Why Villa have moved for Digne

Aston Villa are in advanced talks to sign Everton left-back Lucas Digne – but what will the France international bring to Steven Gerrard’s squad? Digne’s fallout with Rafael Benitez has clouded what appear to be his final weeks with the club but over the past three and a half seasons he has been a key player for Everton. Since he joined in 2018, he has recorded more assists than any other Everton player and led the way for his team in assists and chances created last season. Image: Digne was Everton’s top chance creator last season Everton have signed 22-year-old Vitaliy Mykolenko as a replacement and while the Ukraine international has experience in the Champions League and played at the Euros last summer, he clearly cannot match Digne’s quality and experience at this moment in time. Digne, after all, has over 40 caps for France and has experienced title wins with Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. It will be his creative stats exciting Aston Villa supporters, though. At

Thriving in tandem, VanVleet and Siakam becoming one of NBA’s most prolific duos

TORONTO – With 3:34 left in what was a laugher of a 122-95 victory on Nov. 28, 2016 over a Philadelphia 76ers team still very much going through “the Process,” a rookie Fred VanVleet checked into the game, sharing the floor with fellow rookie Pascal Siakam for the very first time in the NBA. Not a lot happened, especially between the two players, as Siakam converted on an alley-oop pass from Norman Powell and VanVleet missed a short runner. However, though no one possibly could’ve known at the time, these three minutes and 34 seconds of Siakam and VanVleet playing together was the beginning of one of the NBA’s most prolific duos. In total, Siakam and VanVleet have shared an NBA floor for 5,723 minutes and combined for 13,392 points. Just this season alone, despite Siakam’s early-season absence and Covid protocols keeping both players out for a time, the duo has already played 663 minutes together and scored 1,551 points — making up 11.6 per cent of their minutes and point totals

Agent says Giordano could return to Flames and Mangiapane should test free agency

As the agent who represents Mark Giordano and Andrew Mangiapane , Ritch Winter said he can absolutely see a scenario in which the former is traded back to the Flames, and will urge the latter to avoid signing a long-term deal with Calgary this summer. Winter’s candid remarks came in a wide-ranging interview on The Eric Francis Show on Monday, when he provided plenty of insight into two hot-button topics involving the future of the popular players. “I certainly think there’s a possibility,” Winter told Sportsnet Fan 960 listeners when asked if he thought the Flames might re-acquire Giordano — the 38-year-old Seattle Kraken captain — at the trade deadline. “Coach loves him. Player loves the coach. Player has a home in the city. The team seems to be playing much better… and I think there could be an argument that a guy like Gio, with a little more offence, could really add to the mix. “But that’s not something we control.” Obviously not, as that would be up to Seattle GM Ron Fra

Djokovic holds practice session in Australia, but visa questions linger

MELBOURNE, Australia — Novak Djokovic held a practice session on Tuesday, a day after he left immigration detention, focusing on defending his Australian Open title even while he still faces the prospect of deportation because he’s not vaccinated against COVID-19. The top-ranked tennis star hit the show courts of Melbourne Park, where the tournament is held, within hours of winning a legal battle that allowed him to stay in the country. At issue is whether he has a valid exemption to rules requiring vaccination to enter Australia since he recently recovered from COVID-19. A judge ruled Monday he could stay, but the immigration minister could still send him home. There were also new questions raised Tuesday over an immigration form, on which he said he had not travelled in the 14 days before his flight to Australia. The Monte Carlo-based athlete was seen in Spain and Serbia in that two-week period. The back and forth over whether Djokovic complied with Australia’s rules has caused

MLS Draft preview: CF Montreal and Whitecaps look to fill gaps, TFC trades pick

All eyes will be on Charlotte FC at this year’s Major League Soccer SuperDraft. By virtue of being the league’s newest expansion club, Charlotte holds the No. 1 pick in Tuesday afternoon’s draft and will look to bolster its roster from the NCAA player pool ahead of its MLS inaugural season in 2022. Toronto FC looked set to be a major player in the draft, as it held the third overall selection. But the club announced on Monday that it had traded the pick and veteran forward Dom Dwyer to FC Dallas in exchange for $50,000 in general allocation money. With Toronto out of the picture, the Canadian focus in the first round now turns to CF Montreal (11th) and Vancouver Whitecaps (16th), who are both in positions to select solid NCAA prospects. Here’s what you need to know about the 2022 MLS SuperDraft. The Draft Order The first round breaks down like this: • 1-5: Charlotte FC, FC Cincinnati, FC Dallas, Houston Dynamo, Austin FC • 6-10: FC Dallas, Chicago Fire, San Jose Earthquakes,
