How Rodri drives Man City on

As soon as Manchester City signed Rodri in the summer of 2019, Pep Guardiola said that he would be a vital player for the club for the next decade. Others took longer to be convinced. Nobody is in any doubt now. Rodri has become key to City’s success. “He has developed so well in that position over the last couple of seasons,” Gary Neville told Sky Sports . “This happens quite a lot under Pep Guardiola, they just tend to grow and grow and get better and better. Rodri is doing that and has done that now.” The Spaniard has been imperious for City this season. Occasionally making the headlines, scoring a stunner against Everton. Always impressing with his use of the ball, taking it in tight situations, setting the tempo for his team and controlling games as a result. How Hockey Canada is pivoting after NHLers pull out of 2022 Olympics

With the NHL officially pulling players out of the 2022 Winter Olympics due to numerous COVID-19 disruptions to the regular-season schedule, Hockey Canada now has less than six weeks to build a squad of players to compete in the men’s hockey tournament. While that isn’t a lot of time, Hockey Canada vice president Scott Salmond says work has already been done on what the new roster will look like in anticipation of the NHL’s decision. “I think we’ve always prided ourselves on being prepared regardless of if that’s an NHL plan or not,” Salmond said in an interview on The FAN Drive Time Wednesday. “We do have and always had players that were non-NHL players on our long-list so we’re thankful for that because those are the players we’re going to be selecting from.” Salmond said Shane Doan will assume the general manager responsibilities for Team Canada from Blues GM Doug Armstrong and Claude Julien will be the head coach in Beijing, replacing Lightning bench boss Jon Cooper. He added

Former Bottcher vice Darren Moulding to join Team James Grattan

It didn’t take long for Darren Moulding’s phone to start blowing up after news of his departure from Team Brendan Bottcher was made official earlier this month. Fresh from an in-person meeting where he’d been cut, Moulding hopped in his truck with his six-year-old son. His former team issued a statement and the calls and messages started pouring in. Young Brady was curious. He asked his father if he’d been let go and whether he’d find a new team. Still digesting the developments, Moulding – a free agent for mere minutes – saw it as a teachable moment. “Any time something like this happens, you just keep trying,” Moulding said. “I told him I would. So a big motivation is to show him that when something crappy happens to you, you just move forward and you just keep playing.” After taking a few weeks to consider his options, Moulding has decided to join Team James Grattan. The team made it official Wednesday evening via social media channels. Moulding plans to throw third stones fo

PL year in review: Ronaldo’s return, full-back evolution

A bad year for legends-turned-managers Image: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked by Manchester United Frank Lampard was the first Premier League manager to lose his job in 2021 and, barring any sudden developments in the next week, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be the last. It was not a good year for club legends seeking to recreate former glories in the dugout. Lampard enjoyed a positive first season in charge of Chelsea, guiding his former side to a Champions League finish in 2019/20 despite their transfer ban, but expectations changed with the investment that followed and there are certainly no regrets about the decision to appoint Thomas Tuchel in his place. Tuchel is of course a completely different profile to Lampard – vastly experienced as a coach but with only a modest playing background and no ties to the club he is taking over – and Manchester United have gone down the same route by replacing Solskjaer with Tuchel’s countryman Ralf Rangnick. How they would love Rangnick

Gretzky: ‘Not even a question’ Ovechkin will become NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer

Records are made to be broken, as they say, even ones that seem insurmountable. The question of “Will Alexander Ovechkin break the NHL’s all-time goals scored record?” has become slightly altered – we may have to replace “Will” with “When.” At least that’s what The Great One, Wayne Gretzky, believes. “It’s not even a question that he will pass me, and I think it’s great,” Gretzky told The New York Times last week. “He’s well on his way to 40 or 50 goals this year, maybe more. There is no doubt that, ultimately, he will break the record.” With 752 career goals, Ovechkin sits fourth on the NHL’s all-time list, behind Jaromir Jagr (766), Gordie Howe (801) and Gretzky (894). This season, Ovechkin has scored 22 goals, on pace for 57, and has already passed Marcel Dionne and Brett Hull on the all-time list. He also tied Dave Andreychuk as the all-time leader in power-play goals when he blasted home a signature one-timer against the Chicago Blackhawks on Dec. 15. Gretzky has enjoyed wat

Chelsea Women sign Russia left-back Abdullina

Chelsea have signed Russia left-back Alsu Abdullina on a two-and-a-half-year contract from Lokomotiv Moscow. The 20-year-old has signed for the Women’s Super League champions until 2024 and will wear the No 27 shirt. Abdullina moves to the club from Lokomotiv Moscow where she made 46 appearances and scored six goals since making her debut last year. She has also accumulated 30 appearances for the Russia national team. She said: “I am so happy to join Chelsea. This is a big change in my life, a new challenge. I am very proud to be part of this team, which has so many great players. “I want to continue to develop as a player and progress in London. I want to help the team to win as many trophies as possible.” Chelsea boss Emma Hayes added: “Alsu is a very good young player who has accumulated a lot of club and national appearances for her age, including winning the league a number of times with Lokomotiv. “Alsu is a versatile player who can play any position on the left, adding m

Eight NHL team wish lists: Why the Canucks would like a time machine

In the spirit of the holidays, we’re looking at what might be on certain teams’ wish lists at this point in the season. Obviously everyone probably is asking for a clean bill of health in general, plus fewer postponed games and complications that come with the current environment. But aside from that, we want to look at some strengths and weaknesses to see what they could want — realistic or unrealistic — moving forward in to 2022. Vegas Golden Knights: A true penalty kill We’re taking inspiration from Jeff Marek here, who proposed a ‘true penalty kill’ on the 32 Thoughts podcast. Instead of teams just ‘enduring’ two minutes of shots against, he suggested teams effectively kill a penalty off when they score. The Golden Knights would benefit from this shift in rules seeing as they’re one of the best at creating offece while on the penalty kill. Their success runs deeper than their league-leading six shorthanded goals for; below the surface, their expected goal rate of 1.37 per 60 mi

Nketiah hat-trick as Arsenal progress | Arteta: I want him to stay

Eddie Nketiah scored a hat-trick to steer Arsenal past Sunderland and into the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a 5-1 victory. Striker Nketiah and Nicolas Pepe got Arsenal on their way in the first half at the Emirates Stadium, before Nathan Broadhead pulled one back for the League One side. Two more fine finishes from Nketiah after the break sealed a comprehensive win, however, while 18-year-old Charlie Patino rounded off a fine night for the Gunners with a late goal on his senior debut. Raptors enter break with familiar uncertainty after COVID-19 postponement

When the Raptors charter took off from Toronto Pearson International on Tuesday afternoon, bound for Chicago, there were plenty of open seats. The team typically hits the road with a travelling party as high as 60, made up of players, staff, executives, medical personnel, team broadcasters, digital staff and sometimes even select corporate partners. But as the team was trying to get to Chicago for a game against the Bulls scheduled for Wednesday night, the crowd was sparse, numbering just 20, virtually all directly connected to getting a team on the floor. The odds of the game being played weren’t great, given Toronto had seven regulars already in COVID-19 protocols before the wheels went up. But that the game wasn’t cancelled already is in keeping with a very clear NBA mandate: the show must go on. The league that halted the 2019-20 season in March of 2020 when a single-player, Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz, tested positive was determined to keep its schedule relatively intact ev
