Nassar abuse victims reach $380 million settlement with USA Gymnastics, USOPC

The legal wrangling between USA Gymnastics and the victims of sexual abuse by former national team doctor Larry Nassar, among others, is over. The fight for substantive change within the sport’s national governing body is just beginning. A federal bankruptcy court in Indianapolis on Monday confirmed a $380 million settlement between USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee and the hundreds of victims, ending one aspect of the fallout of the largest sexual abuse scandal in the history of the U.S. Olympic movement. Over 90 per cent of the victims, who number more than 500, voted in favour of the tentative agreement reached in September. That agreement called for $425 million in damages, but a modified settlement of $380 million was conditionally approved by the courts. More than 300 victims were abused by Nassar, with the remaining victims abused by individuals affiliated with USA Gymnastics in some capacity. The financial fallout, however, is just one part of t

Man Utd’s match at Brentford off due to Covid

Manchester United’s Premier League fixture away to Brentford on Tuesday night has been postponed due to a Covid outbreak among the visitors’ squad. United made a request to the Premier League to postpone the fixture after being forced to close first-team operations at their Carrington training complex on Monday afternoon. The club said they recorded a “small number” of positive Covid cases among first-team players and staff who took lateral flow tests on Sunday, a day after they beat Norwich 1-0 at Carrow Road . Those positive results were confirmed after PCR tests were undertaken on Monday, and those who have the virus are currently isolating. Rogic gives Celtic victory over Motherwell

Tom Rogic’s first-half strike was enough to give Celtic a 1-0 win over Motherwell and cut the gap on Scottish Premiership leaders Rangers back to four points. Rogic converted David Turnbull’s disguised free-kick at the end of the first half during which Motherwell hit the bar. The home side were far more comfortable after the break as they restored a four-point deficit on Rangers but they suffered another injury to an attacking player when James Forrest trudged off with a muscle problem. Celtic were without a recognised striker after midweek hamstring injuries to Albian Ajeti and Kyogo Furuhashi. Turnbull started up front, supported by Rogic and Callum McGregor behind him. Motherwell also had fitness issues in a key area with Bevis Mugabi their only natural centre-back. Left-back Jake Carroll lined up in the middle of defence. The visitors started with three strikers and gave as good as they got in the first half, although Forrest had an excellent early chance when he stabbed wi

Why Garcia has potential to be a dangerous late-game weapon for Blue Jays

One of the micro reasons the 2021 Toronto Blue Jays fell a win short of the playoffs — shrouded by the more glaring macro ones — was the loss of David Phelps in early May. Up until he went down to a season-ending lat injury, Phelps was providing a steady bridge to the back end of Toronto’s bullpen, pitching to a 0.87 ERA while often protecting slim, seventh-inning leads. But when Phelps got hurt, the Blue Jays began surrendering those leads before they could ever get to the capable hands of Tim Mayza and Jordan Romano, a problem that persisted until the club made its too-late acquisitions of Trevor Richards and Adam Cimber. With Richards and Cimber both returning next season — and Phelps attempting a comeback in spring training on a minor-league deal — the Blue Jays can feel better about their insulation against a similar issue. But you can never have enough capable relief arms kicking around, can you? Enter Yimi Garcia , the 31-year-old right-hander the Blue Jays signed to a two

NBA postpones Bulls games vs. Pistons, Raptors amid COVID-19 outbreak

| December 13, 2021, 1:48 PM December 13, 2021, 1:48 PM Amid a COVID-19 outbreak that has sidelined 10 players, the NBA has postponed the Chicago Bulls ‘ games against the Detroit Pistons and the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday and Thursday respectively. These are the first postponements by the league this season. The team confirmed Monday that backup forward Alize Johnson became the 10th player to enter the protocols, joining a list that includes stars Zach LaVine and DeMar Derozan. Also on it are Troy Brown Jr., Matt Thomas, Coby White, Javonte Green, Derrick Jones Jr., Ayo Dosunmu and Stanley Johnson. That left the Bulls with the eight available players, the league minimum to field a team. That list includes two players on two-way contracts in Devon Dotson and Tyler Cook, another signed to a 10-day contract last week in Alfonzo McKinnie, and rookie Marko Simonovic, who has played most of the season in the G League. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Chicago De

Early Rangers double ends Hearts home run

Early goals from Alfredo Morelos and Joe Aribo gave Scottish Premiership leaders Rangers a 2-0 win at Hearts, who lost at Tynecastle for the first time this season. Hearts, who had won five and drawn three of their home league games before the lunchtime kick-off, flew out of the blocks and could have led inside two minutes through Liam Boyce’s lob, but from Rangers’ first attack after nine minutes Morelos fired home Fashion Sakala’s cutback – and they never looked back. Hearts had not trailed at Tynecastle for a single minute this season and were left stunned as Joe Aribo quickly made it two, taking down a long Connor Goldson pass before firing a powerful finish past Craig Gordon with 13 minutes played. The hosts struggled to regain their momentum but rallied after half-time, striking the bar twice and watching on as Liam Boyce missing a gilt-edged chance, before Josh Ginnelly wasted any realistic hopes of a comeback with a stupid second yellow card for squaring up to Borna Barisic

Howe: Newcastle in a huge fight to stay in PL

Eddie Howe fears Newcastle are in a huge fight to stay in the Premier League as they go into a difficult December run of fixtures on the back of a 4-0 loss at Leicester. Against a Leicester side who had endured a torrid week of their own, suffering Covid-19 absences before being knocked out of the Europa League at Napoli on Thursday, Newcastle were soundly beaten, brought back down to earth following their first win of the campaign against Burnley last Saturday. Howe’s men are 19th in the Premier League, three points from safety, but have Liverpool (A), Manchester City (H) and Manchester United (H) up next. Nevertheless, Howe insists his players should not feel disheartened. I was aware of that when I came in and that won’t change, I don’t think, throughout the whole season. We’re i

COVID-19 looms large over sporting world as NHL goes dark after Flames outbreak

Midway through an NHL press release no team wants to be a part of came a disturbing reminder of just how slippery a slope the Calgary Flames may be on right now. Announcing six players and a training staff member had entered the league’s Covid-19 protocol, the Monday morning release explained that part of the decision to postpone their next three games was due to the “likelihood of additional positive cases in the coming days.” Brace yourself, not just as a hockey fan, but as a human being who wonders daily where all this is going with the Omicron variant threatening to continue canceling more and more things in our lives. Hours later, the NBA announced an outbreak on the Bulls would postpone two of their games. It’s all too eerily familiar. Just like that, the Andrew Mangiapane Olympic debate takes on a whole new look, as the NHL and its players have even more reason to contemplate scrapping talk of attending the Beijing Games. With Mangiapane, Elias Lindholm, Chris Tanev, Ni

‘GOATSTAPPEN’: Sports world explodes as Verstappen snatches title from Hamilton

As if the final race of the Formula One season couldn’t get any more dramatic, the duel between bitter rivals Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton came down to a controversial final lap — with the Red Bull driver as the victor. Both drivers entered the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix tied at 369 points to set up an epic winner-take-all finale. Hamilton took the lead out of the gates, and looked as though he’d cruise to a record-breaking eighth world championship with under 10 laps to go, before Canadian and Williams driver Nicolas Latifi altered history. Latifi crashed, bringing out a safety car and giving Verstappen one last chance to beat Hamilton after race director Michael Masi ruled the drivers could overtake the safety car on the final lap to duke it out. The result: Verstappen earns his first instead of Hamilton winning an eighth. Here are some of the best reactions from across the sports world: GOATSTAPPEN pic.twitter.com/9h7wytW1Hp — Joel “Troel” Embiid (@JoelEmbiid) December 12,

Maddison stars as clinical Leicester hit four past Toon

Leicester ended a difficult week with a much-needed 4-0 Premier League win over Newcastle, who now must navigate a nightmare run of fixtures in December. With Jamie Vardy benched and Jonny Evans forced off with a hamstring injury inside a few minutes, it was looking like another tricky afternoon for Leicester, who endured a Covid outbreak in midweek followed by their Europa League exit in Naples. But Youri Tielemans’ controversial penalty (38) gave them the lead after James Maddison was adjudged to have been tripped by Jamaal Lascelles. It was soft, but there was nothing contentious about Leicester’s second goal as Patson Daka tapped into an empty net to off a fine team move started by a sublime Maddison flick (57).
