Lakers’ Davis disputes James’ suspension: ‘Guys get hit in the face all the time’

LeBron James received a one-game suspension for his involvement in the Los Angeles Lakers – Detroit Pistons altercation on Sunday, one game less than Isaiah Stewart . But even so, teammate and fellow All-Star Anthony Davis is having trouble understanding why James was suspended at all — especially given the NBA’s explanation. “I was surprised. I mean, I didn’t think he would get suspended. I don’t think anyone thought he was going to be suspended, to be honest. It was an accident. I mean, he accidentally hit (Stewart) in the face,” said Davis following Tuesday’s 106-100 loss to the New York Knicks with James absent. “I guess the report came out that his hit to the face caused an incident, which is weird because he can’t control how a guy’s gonna react. I mean guys get hit the face all the time, and we’re saying that caused the incident. I get hit in my face probably more than anyone, and if I go off and do all that, the other guy who hit me in the face is gonna get suspended as

Brereton Diaz strikes twice as Blackburn romp past Posh

Blackburn made it two wins in three with an emphatic 4-0 victory over woeful Peterborough in the Sky Bet Championship. Tony Mowbray’s men were home and dry by half-time after a three-goal, first-half blitz put them out of sight of their beleaguered visitors. From the moment Harry Pickering headed Rovers into a 16th-minute lead on his 150th career league start, the game had an air of inevitability to it. Blackburn exposed the league’s worst defence twice more before the break, through a tap-in from Ben Brereton Diaz and Darragh Lenihan’s free header. Brereton Diaz emphatically made it four in the 60th minute to record his 16th goal of the season as Blackburn moved within a point of the play-offs. It was a worrying performance from Darren Ferguson’s side and it is easy to see why they are in the bottom three. Their defensive issues are well documented but they also spurned two glorious chances at the start of the second half. They have now lost nine of their 10 away games. Ty

Four members of Blue Jays earn 2021 All-MLB honours

Four members of the Toronto Blue Jays were named to a star-studded list of players comprising the 2021 All-MLB teams, an honour that recognizes excellence achieved over the full breadth of a big league season. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. , Marcus Semien and Robbie Ray were named to the First Team. Teoscar Hernandez was awarded a place on the Second Team. An incredible way to cap off Award Season. Congrats to our FOUR #AllMLB Team selections! pic.twitter.com/EN8aL1fYWU — Toronto Blue Jays (@BlueJays) November 24, 2021 The All-MLB teams are split into first and second teams, decided by voters charged with considering only regular season performance when casting their ballots. Fans accounted for 50 per cent of the voting, and a panel of experts handled the other 50 per cent. Guerrero Jr., who was named the first base player for the All-MLB First Team, enjoyed a prolific campaign in which he tied Salvador Perez for the MLB home run title while leading the league in runs with 123.

‘Over the moon’ Kyle Clifford joins Maple Leafs in California

The ghosts of Kyle Clifford ’s NHL past are colliding all at once. One week after being reacquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs , everything is sunny in the life of Clifford. The bottom-six power forward is back in Los Angeles — where he began his pro career and won a couple Stanley Cup rings — and was officially recalled to the Leafs after a weekend of conditioning with the AHL Marlies. After getting hit with COVID symptoms and waived by the St. Louis Blues after just two pro games (and one assist) this season, Clifford’s $1.3 million salary ($1 million cap hit) was scooped up by Kyle Dubas for future considerations. The Blues saved real money. The Leafs brought back a real dressing room favourite, a veteran presence, and a standup guy the GM has believed in since the Soo. “A welcoming call from Kyle. I was over the moon, excited to be back here,” Clifford said during his lone meeting with Marlies reporters. “Unbelievable city. It’s home. So, it makes it easy. It’s a no-brainer.”

Beach, Blackhawks will go to mediator to try to settle lawsuit

Kyle Beach and the Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to mediation as they attempt to settle a lawsuit against the NHL team. The Blackhawks and counsel for Kyle Beach and John Doe 2 released a joint statement on the decision on Tuesday. “We are working together to achieve a fair resolution of both cases outside of the litigation process,” the statement says. “To that end, we have agreed to enter mediation with a mutually agreed upon third-party mediator, commencing on December 15th, and will engage in good faith efforts to resolve these matters.” Last month, Beach identified himself as one of the victims alleging he was sexually assaulted by former Blackhawks video coach Brad Aldrich in 2010. Beach, a former player in the Blackhawks organization, is suing the team over alleged actions that were made public in a report published by Jenner & Block last month after an investigation into conduct that occurred during the team’s 2010 run to the Stanley Cup. The investigation revealed t

Man Utd hold initial talks with Valverde over interim role

Manchester United have held initial talks with Ernesto Valverde as they continue their search for an interim manager to take charge until the end of the season. Valverde is one of a number of potential candidates to have spoken with United, and it is understood other prominent managers are in the frame for the role. United are conducting a thorough process to appoint an interim boss following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last week, before beginning their search for a permanent successor. The club are planning to make a permanent appointment at the end of the season and Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino is their first choice, with Ajax head coach Erik Ten Hag also in their thinking. United are not ruling out the possibility of making a mid-season move for a permanent manger – even if they appoint an interim beforehand. It is understood the former Tottenham boss would be interested in moving to Old Trafford , though Pochettino said on Monday he is “so happy” at PS

Connor McDavid’s point streak ends at 17 games as Oilers lose to Stars

| November 23, 2021, 11:07 PM November 23, 2021, 11:07 PM Connor McDavid ‘s historic point streak to start the season has come to an end. The Edmonton Oilers captain was kept off the scoreboard in a 4-1 loss to the Dallas Stars Tuesday night. McDavid’s 17-game streak is tied for the eighth-longest such streak to begin a season. It also ranks third in Oilers franchise history, behind two Wayne Gretzky performances: 51 consecutive games to start the 1983-84 season and 30 consecutive games at the start of the 1982-83 campaign. McDavid’s overall point streak ends at 25 games if including games from last season when McDavid was the unanimous Hart Trophy winner with 105 points in just 56 games. “His accomplishment so far has been unbelievable,” head coach Dave Tippett said after the game. The 24-year-old recorded 12 goals and 32 points during the streak. His teammate, Leon Draisaitl , recorded an assist on Ryan McLeod’s goal against the Stars to extend his overall scoring

In a mighty forgettable loss to Stars, Oilers suffer two key setbacks

EDMONTON — A key injury to Duncan Keith and the end to Connor McDavid ’s points streak. Those two setbacks and a 4-1 loss made the Edmonton Oilers ‘ trip into Dallas a mighty forgettable one Tuesday night. Hey – it could have been worse, as a beleaguered Stuart Skinner made some circus stops to stop this one from being a laugher. It was just one of those games: McDavid couldn’t keep the puck on his stick from one zone to the next; the Stars out-checked and outworked Edmonton all over the ice, and Leon Draisaitl had more minor penalties (two) than points (one). “A few too many penalties,” said defenceman Cody Ceci of the five minors taken by the Oilers. “They got some momentum with some goals on those penalties and changed the whole course of the game.” Edmonton’s defence was too soft in front of its own net, as the Stars tipped two pucks past a chanceless Skinner, and a usually stout penalty kill gave up two goals, and another just seconds after a Dallas power play had expired. “

Thiago, Salah strikes see Liverpool ease past Porto

Second-half strikes from Thiago and Mohamed Salah saw Liverpool ease past Porto as they won 2-0 and kept on course for a perfect Champions League group stage. Heading into the game, Liverpool had already qualified as Group B winners, but Jurgen Klopp made just four changes from the weekend’s victory against Arsenal and handed a European debut to 19-year-old Tyler Morton. Porto began quickly and the complexion of the match could have been so different if Otavio had fired home a glorious chance in the 12th minute. Liverpool also had the ball in the net in the first half, but Sadio Mane’s strike was ruled out by VAR for offside. It took just seven minutes for the hosts to take the lead after half-time thanks to a wonderful half-volleyed strike from Thiago. After another goal was ruled out for offside – Takumi Minamino’s effort flagged – Salah fired home his 17th goal in 17 games to make it five wins in five in the group stage so far for Liverpool. As for Porto, their quest for the kn

Trio of former Kings giving Sutter’s Flames meaningful minutes on fourth line

CALGARY — With the Calgary Flames clinging to a late, one-goal lead Tuesday night, Trevor Lewis flipped a dribbler towards the Chicago Blackhawks ‘ empty net from centre ice. As Dominik Kubalik closed in on his chance to sweep the puck out of harm’s way, Milan Lucic raced in with a chance to tap it in on the doorstep. Instead, as the consummate teammate, the hulking veteran deftly stuck his stick out to shield the puck from the defender, allowing it to cross the goal line and clinch the team’s fourth-straight win. “I was kind of a (bit) of a curler on that one — sweeper — to make sure it was going in because I knew one of their guys was coming back,” smiled Lucic after a 5-2 win at the Saddledome. “I saw it was going in and just wanted to make sure it was going in for him.” Lewis was clearly appreciative of the gesture. “He told me I should have put it in,” laughed Lucic, when asked what his teammate said to him. Coach Darryl Sutter agreed the play was the type of selflessne

Man City seal top spot after comeback win against PSG

Manchester City sealed their passage into the Champions League last 16 as group winners after coming from a goal down to beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium. City dominated the opening 45 minutes but could not find a breakthrough as Mauricio Pochettino, who was heavily linked with the vacant Manchester United job in the build-up to the game, saw his PSG side hold firm under a barrage of pressure from the hosts. Pep Guardiola’s side were made to pay for their wastefulness early in the second half as Kylian Mbappe put the Ligue 1 leaders ahead against the run of play. However, City stormed back, with goals from Raheem Sterling and substitute Gabriel Jesus completing the turnaround, to secure a place in the knockout phase with a game to spare. The victory sees Guardiola’s men, who are aiming to win their first Champions League title, also top Group A with one game left to play, while PSG are also through despite the loss in Manchester because of Club Brugge’s 5-0 defea

Steven Matz agrees to join Cardinals on four-year, $44M contract

Free-agent left-hander Steven Matz has agreed to a four-year, $44-million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals , Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith can confirm. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, who first reported the deal, the contract includes a signing bonus and could reach $48 million if Matz hits other incentives. The agreement is pending a physical. Matz rebounded last season while with the Toronto Blue Jays , posting a 14-7 record with a 3.82 ERA, 144 strikeouts and 43 walks in 2021. The Blue Jays acquired the 30-year-old from the New York Mets last January. Matz spent the first six years of his career in New York and made one start in the 2015 World Series as a rookie. Nicholson-Smith reports that the Blue Jays and Matz showed mutual interest in reuniting, but USA Today ‘s Bob Nightengale reports Matz received offers from eight teams. snippet id=5243960] The 2021 season saw Matz pitch more than 150 innings and throw more than 140 strikeouts for just the third time in hi

Pep: Poch a top manager, with or without trophies

Pep Guardiola says Mauricio Pochettino is an “excellent manager”, despite not having won as many trophies as some of his peers. Pochettino has been linked with the Manchester United job, in the wake of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure, but his current focus is on an enticing Champions League clash at the Etihad on Wednesday, between his Paris Saint-Germain team and Guardiola’s Manchester City. Prior to taking charge of PSG, Pochettino had a successful stint with Spurs, but he failed to win any silverware with the London club and his title bid in France fell short last season. However, Guardiola says the Argentine is fully deserving of his place among the game’s elite coaches, and thinks he will be even more formidable than when his Spurs side knocked City out of the Champions League in 2019. “I’m pretty sure the managers get better,” said Guardiola. “Every season we go through, you have a lot of learnings, and I’m pretty sure he’s an excellent manager. Jarry posts 30 saves, Penguins extend win streak with victory over Jets

WINNIPEG — Jason Zucker believes Pittsburgh goalie Tristan Jarry is on his way to having a statement season. Jarry had another big game on Monday, backstopping the Penguins to their third straight win, a 3-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets . The netminder made 30 saves for the win, which followed a pair of shutouts against Montreal and Toronto. “He’s playing with great confidence and that’s huge for us,” Zucker said. “We knew that over the summer he was going to take himself very seriously, and the training seriously, and come back and want to have a statement year. And this trip, I think, was huge for him.” Danton Heinen scored the go-ahead goal at 3:33 of the third period. Zucker and Jake Guentzel, with an empty-netter, also had goals for the Penguins (8-6-4), who were ending a three-game Canadian road trip. Dominic Toninato scored for the Jets (9-5-4), who’ve lost three straight (0-2-1). Connor Hellebuyck made 33 saves for Winnipeg, which is 7-2-1 at Canada Life Centre this se

How much would Man Utd have to pay PSG for Poch?

Manchester United will have to pay £8.4m if they want to prise Mauricio Pochettino away from Paris Saint-Germain, according to French football expert Jonathan Johnson. Pochettino is interested in replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford and he is Manchester United’s first choice to take over permanently from the Norwegian, who was sacked on Sunday. The Argentine was appointed at PSG on an initial 18-month deal in January but is now contracted to the Ligue 1 club until the summer of 2023 after the option of an extra year was activated. Image: Mauricio Pochettino is interested in replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford PSG are 11 points clear at the top of Ligue 1 but Johnson believes United could “bring PSG to the table” if they were to pay up the rest of Pochettino’s contract, especially given former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane could be available as a potential replacement. “No move has been made by any party at this time – that’s my understanding,” he to

Quarter-mark review: Canadiens’ early-season pain paves road to Shane Wright

A snapshot of the Montreal Canadiens through the first 20 games of the 2021-22 season is almost too grotesque to look at, but we’re presenting it anyway. Our editor asked us for a quarter-mark review — a report card of sorts. This one will read as the kind you’d want to hide from your parents. How did the Canadiens get to 5-13-2? Let us count the ways. They allowed more than five goals in eight of their games. Their power play scored on less than 15 per cent of its chances and now ranks 28th in the NHL, and their penalty kill is 29th after operating at less than 70 per cent. Also, only three teams have scored fewer goals per game, and only two teams have given up more goals per game. That’s a capital F all around. It can stand for “Fail,” or another word of your choosing that starts with F. It’s not just that the Canadiens have been bad; they’ve also been unlucky. At 5-on-5, they’ve controlled more than 50 per cent of the shot attempts and close to 50 per cent of the expected
