Van Bronckhorst on three-man Rangers shortlist

Former Rangers defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst is one of three final candidates on a shortlist to replace Steven Gerrard as manager at Ibrox. Van Bronckhorst, who held “positive” talks with the club in London on Saturday , is still among those sporting director Ross Wilson is considering. Sky Sports News has been told the talks with Van Bronckhorst were focused on the short and long-term strategy of the club and although contract terms were not discussed, it is believed the Dutchman’s values and ideas are aligned with Rangers. The Scottish Premiership champions are very pleased and impressed with their shortlist and will hold further talks on Monday. Mahomes throws for 5 touchdowns as Chiefs clobber Raiders

LAS VEGAS — Patrick Mahomes threw five touchdown passes and returned to his usual form after a surprisingly shaky stretch this season, and the Kansas City Chiefs moved into first place in the AFC West with a 41-14 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday night. Mahomes and the Chiefs (6-4) showed little resemblance to the team that overpowered the AFC the past three seasons over the first nine weeks, raising questions about whether they could make it back to a third straight Super Bowl. But they used a dominant performance over the Raiders (5-4) on a day everyone else in the division lost to return to the top of the standings. Mahomes completed three short TD passes before flashing his playmaking brilliance early in the fourth quarter after Kansas City converted a fake punt on a 16-yard pass from Tommy Townsend to Marcus Kemp. Two plays later, Mahomes scrambled away from pressure and just before crossing the line of scrimmage lofted a deep pass across his body that Darrel Wi

Devils’ Subban could be in hot water again after Rangers’ Blais injured

| November 14, 2021, 11:52 PM November 14, 2021, 11:52 PM New Jersey Devils defenceman P.K. Subban has drawn the ire of the New York Rangers again after forward Sammy Blais had to be helped off the ice following a collision Sunday night. Chasing a puck in the corner, Subban and Blais came together, with Subban’s skate clipping Blais’ as they battled. Blais fell into the boards and appeared to turn either his knee or his ankle awkwardly. He went down immediately and clutched his leg, his face contorted in agony. No penalty was called on the play. Subban has been fined twice this season for slew-footing, including once for a pre-season encounter with the Rangers’ Ryan Reaves. Rangers coach Gerard Gallant saw some similarities between the two incidents: “A lot like the Reaves one that I saw,” he told reporters after the game. Subban, 32, has one goal and six assists in 14 games this season for the Devils. Devils’ Subban could be in hot water again after Rangers’ B

Norwich appoint Smith as head coach

Norwich have appointed Dean Smith as head coach on a two-and-a-half-year deal. Smith, sacked by Aston Villa eight days ago, agreed to take over at Norwich on Saturday after Frank Lampard withdrew from the running. Smith is joined at Carrow Road by Craig Shakespeare, who was his assistant at Villa Park. “It has been a whirlwind seven days, but I’m really pleased to be back and working for Norwich City in the Premier League,” said Smith. “Clearly, there has been some wonderful work that has gone into this football club over the last four-and-a-half years. It is now the job of myself and Craig to continue and improve on that work with the ultimate aim of surviving in the Premier League. Canucks’ brutal road trip concludes with one-sided loss to Ducks

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Trevor Zegras had two goals and an assist, Troy Terry extended his scoring streak to 14 games and the Anaheim Ducks rolled to their seventh straight victory, 5-1 over the slumping Vancouver Canucks on Sunday night. Sonny Milano also scored and John Gibson made 26 saves for the Ducks, who remained in second place in the Pacific Division while staying perfect since Oct. 29. Adam Henrique and Sam Steel added goals in the final minute for Anaheim, which has earned a point in nine straight games and scored at least three goals in a franchise-record 11 consecutive games. Nils Hoglander scored and Jaroslav Halak stopped 33 shots for the Canucks, who have lost four straight and eight of 10. The loss Sunday concluded a three-game road swing in which the Canucks were outscored 19-6. Zegras, the Ducks’ promising 20-year-old center, produced the first multigoal game of his NHL career while scoring a career-best three points. Zegras got both of his goals on the power play

Ramsdale and Smith Rowe to start for England vs San Marino

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is expected to make his England debut against San Marino on Monday night, with his Arsenal team-mate Emile Smith Rowe also expected to make his first England start. England are likely to line up in a 3-4-3 formation, with one of the youngest squads that Gareth Southgate has ever used in his five years in charge. Ramsdale has been a regular in the senior England set-up since being part of the extended squad of 33 that Southgate named for the pre-Euros training camp in June. However, he is yet to play in any senior fixture – when Southgate decided to rest Jordan Pickford last month against Andorra, it was Sam Johnstone who got the nod in goal. Fluke bounce symbolic of rough season for Petry, Canadiens

It’s a textbook play, the kind you teach young defencemen to lean on as a safety valve of sorts. With trouble stirring in front of your own net, get the puck and dump it into the corner. The idea is to alleviate the pressure, win a board battle and transition the other way. It usually works. But on this night, with his Montreal Canadiens tied 2-2 in the third period of their first game against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden in 21 months, Jeff Petry pounced on a rebound in front of his own net, raised the puck towards the corner of the rink and ended up striking Bruins forward Charlie Coyle right in the visor. It bounced off Canadiens goaltender Samuel Montembeault and went straight into Montreal’s net. It was such a fluke that NHL.com labelled it in its hyperlink as a go-ahead goal credited to Coyle instead of one he actually scored. Great bounce for the hometown kid. Awful one for Petry and the Canadiens. Symbolic, really. It seems as though since this season got underway

San Marino vs England: Who will bolster World Cup claim?

With qualification to Qatar 2022 within touching distance, Monday’s trip to minnows San Marino offers those on the fringes of Gareth Southgate’s squad one final chance to leave a lasting impression before England enter a World Cup year. England head to FIFA’s 210th and lowest-ranked nation needing just a point to guarantee top spot in Group I and a place at next year’s World Cup. Southgate’s side are not expected to encounter too many issues against a team who are bottom of the world rankings and have lost all nine World Cup Qualifiers by an aggregate score of 36-1. World Cup Qualifying – Group I Team Games played Points England 5 15 Poland 5 10 Albania 5 9 Hungary 5 7 Andorra 5 3 San Marino 5 0 But England will need no reminding of the infamous 1993 trip to the enclave where a 7-1 victory proved insufficient as Graham Taylor’s side missed out on a place at the 1994 World Cup. Should England get the job done and they will extend t

NFL Sunday Roundup: Packers’ Rodgers wins in return, Bills, Cowboys roll

Week 10 of the NFL season saw several big-name quarterbacks make their returns. Green Bay Packers star Aaron Rodgers was a winner after his absence from COVID-19 — and the ensuing controversy for his comments on vaccination — while Cam Newton helped the Carolina Panthers knock off the Arizona Cardinals. Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys bounced back after disappointing losses, while the short-handed Tennessee Titans remained on top of the AFC after another victory. Here’s a look at what went down on Sunday. Rodgers, Packers knock off Seahawks as Wilson comes back GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers was uneven in his return from COVID-19 but did more than enough to support a standout Green Bay Packers defense in a 17-0 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. A.J. Dillon rushed for two fourth-quarter touchdowns for the Packers, who handed the Seahawks their first shutout loss in a decade. A week after he was forced to sit out a loss at Kansas City because of
