Does Solskjaer have the answers?

Ole is at the wheel. Viva Ronaldo. World champions twice. The Manchester United away fans remain as vocal as any in the land and they have had a good run of it too. But that fine record of 29 games without defeat came to a halt against Leicester. There was still applause for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he went over to acknowledge their support following United’s 4-2 defeat at the King Power Stadium. But how long can performances such as this one be tolerated as expectations rise? Almost three years into the job, the early signs this season suggest that Manchester United are still not good enough to compete for the title. Eight games in and they are adrift of the three favourites – three teams all coached by Champions League winning managers. There can be no talk of misfortune. The performances have been poor. Everton could have won at Old Trafford, the win at Wolves was scarcely deserved, and the late victory over West Ham required a late goal and a penalty save from David de Gea. Sol

Late NHLer Jimmy Hayes died with fentanyl, cocaine in his system

Former NHL player Jimmy Hayes had fentanyl and cocaine in his system when he died this past August, his family revealed in an interview with The Boston Globe . In the interview, Hayes’ widow Kristen and father Kevin say they hope that sharing their family’s experience will help others avoid a similar tragedy. “I hope getting Jimmy’s story out there can save someone’s life,” Kevin Hayes said. “If this can save someone from the pain, great. It’s just so sad.” Jimmy Hayes, 31, was found unresponsive in his home outside Boston on Aug. 23. The six-foot-five power forward played with the Chicago Blackhawks , Florida Panthers , Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils over his seven-year NHL career. His younger brother, Kevin Hayes Jr., is a forward with the Philadelphia Flyers. Kevin Hayes Sr. told the Globe that his late son had sought treatment for an addiction to pills, which developed after he began taking painkillers to get over an injury. “I’m an addict myself,” Hayes Sr. said “I’m

Raptors roster breakdown: How final cut impacts cap, Raptors 905, more

The Toronto Raptors ’ trip to the famous Rocky statue in Philadelphia must have resonated with Sam Dekker. Heading into the team’s final pre-season game, Dekker looked to be on the outside of a very competitive battle for the final few roster spots. He’d barely played through four games, and with Yuta Watanabe all but assured a spot and Isaac Bonga getting heavy pre-season opportunity, it felt like it was down to Dekker against Ishmail Wainright for the last position, if the Raptors opted to keep 15 NBA contracts at all. Pragmatically, a single pre-season performance shouldn’t carry too heavy an influence. The evaluation process for this part of the roster begins long before exhibition games. For Wainright, that went back to Las Vegas Summer League in early August. For Dekker, it was free agent mini-camps preceding that event. All of the team’s young players, new faces and roster hopefuls took part in a number of mini-camps between then and the official start of training camp in lat

NFL Sunday Roundup: Chiefs rout Washington, Cowboys get rare win over Patriots

Last-minute field goals, first victories and some of the league’s best teams continuing their dominance — Week 6 of the NFL season has had it all. Here’s what you need to know. Chiefs pull away from Washington in second half to return to .500 LANDOVER, Md. — Patrick Mahomes threw for 397 yards and engineered three second-half touchdown drives to compensate for a pair of interceptions, leading the Kansas City Chiefs to a 31-13 comeback victory at Washington on Sunday that got them back to .500. After throwing two picks before halftime, Mahomes connected with Tyreek Hill on a 2-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter. He put the game out of reach with a 24-yarder to Demarcus Robinson with 3:14 left in the fourth period. In between, new starting running back Darrel Williams rushed for his second TD of the game to help Kansas City (3-3) avoid what would have been an embarrassing loss. The defence also finally played its part, holding an opponent under 29 points for the first t

How Vieira is transforming Palace

A cursory glance at the Premier League table suggests little has changed for Crystal Palace this season. In fact, with only one win from their opening seven games, they are three points worse off than they were at the same stage of the last campaign. And yet, despite middling results, the mood around the club is one of renewed optimism. Roy Hodgson provided stability but Patrick Vieira is striving for something more. It only takes a visit to Selhurst Park to see how supporters are responding. Last month’s 3-0 victory over Tottenham, played in a feverish atmosphere in the south-London sunshine, offered a tantalising glimpse of what the future might look like. In fact, the third goal, scored by Odsonne Edouard after fine work from Michael Olise and Connor Gallagher, was a neat encapsulation of the club’s change of direction under Vieira. CHICAGO — Candace Parker returned home to bring Chicago a championship. She did just that, leading the Sky to the franchise’s first title. I love this group, I love this team. And to do it here at home, it was just supposed to be.” Courtney Vandersloot added 10 points and 15 assists for the Sky, who won the series 3-1, rallying from a 72-65 deficit with 4:42 left. Chicago scored the next nine points to take a two-point lead on Stefanie Dolson’s layup. She then added another basket to make it 76-72 with 45.8 seconds left.
